If the historical process out of which contemporary religious beliefs have emerged was reliable in the sense of having a high chance of generating truth, then the theistic reply to atheism will succeed. Something is believed in, not on its own direct account, but through something else which stand as witness, evidence, proof, voucher, warrant, that is, as ground of belief.
