On December 7th, 2005, federal agents conducted a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists involved with the Earth Liberation Front — an organization the FBI has called America's "number one domestic terrorism threat."
IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT is the remarkable story of the group's rise and fall, told through the transformation and radicalization of one of its members, Daniel McGowan. Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thriller, the film interweaves a chronicle of McGowan facing life in prison with a dramatic investigation of the events that led to his involvement with the ELF. Using never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews — with cell members and with the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them — IF A TREE FALLS asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.

'If A Tree Falls' Traces Earth Liberation Front's Rise - NPR
February 21, 2012Before 9/11, the FBI labelled a radical environmental group America's number one domestic terrorism threat.
In the documentary If A Tree Falls, director Marshall Curry tells the story of the rise and fall of the Earth Liberation Front. Between 1995 and 2001, members of the group operated in separate anonymous cells, committing acts of arson across the Western United States. The group targeted ski resorts, lumber companies, SUV dealerships and Forest Service ranger stations.
The film — which has been nominated for an Academy Award — focuses on why one member, Daniel McGowan, decided to use violence. McGowan was arrested in December 2005 and was sentenced to 7 years in prison in 2007.
Curry talks with NPR's Neal Conan about McGowan's radicalization and the rise and fall of the "eco-terrorist" organization.
