In this video essay, Bill Moyers addresses the question of how to honor religious liberty without it becoming the liberty to impose on others moral beliefs they don't share. The recent debate over contraception coverage in Catholic hospitals and other faith-based institutions brought this question to the forefront, but then something surprising happened — a reasonable, practical, and equitable solution from President Obama that took the political steam out of what some saw as a holy war.
Special thanks to historian Julie Pycior of Manhattan College for her helpful insights on this issue and this essay.

Comment by Adriana on February 20, 2012 at 1:45pm Yes, Bill, I don't give it much hope either. In principle, it's always a good idea to NOT demonize your enemy or rival, whether political or of other nature. The danger is that while I can see some well-intentioned liberals (or ex-liberals, like Jon Haidt) trying to put themselves into the other band's shoes or trying to see the world from their point of view, I honestly cannot imagine Tea Partiers having a chimp doll with a fez hat with a T-shirt that says "Obama", or a crazy lunatic like Santorum, who opposes contraception, to even attempt to understand the other side's argument.
I think the current political climate is truly a clash of worldviews, in big part the clash between secular values and theocracy.

Comment by Bill on February 20, 2012 at 11:47am Adriana, your assessment of Jon mostly parallels what I got from the Moyers interview. I wonder what a guy like this looks like to a Tea Partyer? I don't give his campaign to get liberals and conservatives to stop demonizing each other much hope.

Comment by Adriana on February 20, 2012 at 8:33am I did not see his interview with Jon Haidt. I like some of Jon's stuff and of course we all have blinders but I disagree with Jon on his interpretation of the left-right conflict. We have been discussing this in Books and I'm pretty sure in Morality, too (Or it may have been back at TA). I do not like his newly found love for libertarianism (my interpretation). Plus check out his WSJ article on the Tea Party (link). His "karma" explanation for tea Party rage in my opinion, is complete BS.

Comment by Davy on February 20, 2012 at 4:56am He is a good speaker, he did not ridicule anyone but made his points well.
Truth is spoken quietly not yelled and screamed out.

Comment by Bill on February 19, 2012 at 11:30pm One of Bill's recent guests was Jonathan Haidt. I have to say, this guy really made me think outside my comfort zone. I'm not ready to accept that the left is just as much in a box as the right, I don't think anyone on the right is even thinking about these things. Did anyone else see this? What do you think?

Comment by Sydni Moser on February 19, 2012 at 10:22pm I adore Moyers and was so glad to see him return to broadcast TV. His reasonable voice is so necessary given the insane antics of Fox News and the like. Loved this segment as well.

Comment by Michel on February 19, 2012 at 8:06pm Anti-Rush indeed.
Can you imagine anyone yelling this kind of wisdom?

Comment by Adriana on February 19, 2012 at 6:30pm Great video!

Comment by Bill on February 19, 2012 at 5:28pm Moyers is the Anti-Rush!

Comment by Bill on February 19, 2012 at 5:28pm I love Bill Moyers' new show. No soundbites there! Instead, thoughtful, deep discussion of important issues.
