A couple of months ago I was in an internet chat with someone who said he thought the U.S. Congress and many citizens in America got Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of all the nonstop news coverage of the World Trade Center Building attacks. He speculated that PTSD is why congress gave full authority to President "W" Bush for the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. I always though the CIA should handle it rather than going to war. I also though bin Laden should have been tried in the International Criminal Court (ICC). Anyway, he went on to say PTSD is why the citizens allowed the forfeiture of their privacy in trade for security. I hadn't though of this psychological response before as I don't have PTSD from it, but think he's making a valid point. I saw quite a bit of coverage of the Kenya mall attacks here in the U.S. on various different TV news services. They were probably broadcast locally on the TV and radio full time as the 9/11 attacks were here. I find it strange how many people behave as though they were at the scene on 9/11. The town I live in just opened a large memorial for the victims of 9/11 even though no one in town or any of their family members were killed there. I think it's glorifying catastrophe and a way to bring tourists from NYC into town. Of course PTSD might explain it too. Some think I'm cold hearted because I don't break out into prayer, tears, or worship of the military when ever 9/11 is brought up.
Maybe you'll notice if and how PTSD from the broadcasts effects the community at large and the government's decisions in Kenya. That would be a difficult thing to actually measure, but would be an interesting study about the effect of the media on the population. I know the situation in Kenya is different because of the proximity to Somalia and the ongoing battles with Al-Shabab. The media here is calling it Kenya's 9/11. My sympathy goes out to you and Kenya.
HELP! I saw, I believe your comment on five panelists discussing "Nothing and the origin of the universe". I am not technically proficient, and can't find the video which was terribly complex, but important to me. I want to see it again. Can you help me find it? I guess you leave a message on my page.Thank you very much. Bob Jagiello
