Wonder,
a garden among the flames!

My heart can take on
any form:
a meadow for gazelles,
a cloister for monks,

For the idols, sacred ground,
Ka'ba for the circling pilgrim,
the tables of the Torah,
the scrolls of the Qur'an.

My creed is love;
wherever its caravan turns along the way,
that is my belief,
my faith.

ibn Arabi (1164 - 1240 A.D / 558-638 AH)
his grave in Damascus.

what a peaceful man.

it's not up to me to decide what Islam is, it's up to those who call themselves Muslims to define Islam in their own way and words as as individuals or the fundamentalists will win as they claim to be the only ones who define Islam. if he deny the existence of God, he would argue about it as Ibn al-Razi did in his time.

I've studied Sufism for quite a while. Very interesting fellows - at least some of them are. In my opinion they provided the best deconstruction of religions and cults ever. Most are crazy-mystical but a much better alternative than fanaticism or unquestioning blind faith.

Some even claim they invented Islam.

Didnt most muslims perceive him as an apostate.

Hard to argue with the "My creed is love" line.

@Ali

Honestly, some of the Sufis don't consider themselves as Muslims.. I myself dont consider them as Muslims at all..

I once watched a documentary about Sufism on Al Jazeera, they interviewed a Sufi scholar "they were hiding his identity for his safety".. He says; "We Sufis are not Muslims, we created Sufism just because we rejected Islam"..

@hope

he was Muslim scholar (Sunni-Sufi) Before the Arab decadence.
in his book the Meccan Conquests he said :

الرب حق والعبد حق ياليت شعري من المكلف
إن قلت عبد فذاك ميت أو قلت رب أنى يكلف

haha and he believes that Allah is in everything  and as everything so If you worship yourself, you worship Allah lol.

Hope calling someone an infidel. Pot meet kettle, we are all infidels on this website. :P

Was he infidel or Sufi, or both?
