We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

What brings people to be extremely forgiving of "horrible" crimes

One of my questions is "are atheists more forgiving". But before i get into that, what is the purpose of forgiveness and why do we forgive.

Forgiveness is one of two things we can do,be merciful or killed in an evolutionary sense(the modern of form of killing may be imprisonment or shunning). I suppose this has something to do with the fact that some people are beneficial to us and it would be wasteful to kill them.Contrary to this,  people who are of no value who are causing a ruckus would be killed or shunned.

With that being said, where does the extreme forms of forgiveness such as Christianity. Why are most religions (conceptual) obsessed with forgiveness. While most Abraham religions incite violence in some instances, what is the obsession  with forgiving people, like forgiving Moses who killed a man. Emotions, which can lead to murder, are typically knee-jerk reactions. When we think,we see things in perspective and see that some people still have purpose.

However punishment can be a form of forgiveness in a way. Punishment can cause us to change us in a different more positive way and i use the word "punishment" more as an action taken to correct a behavior rather than harming someone out of revenge. For example, a carrot that is pulled out of the ground will whine, but washing it will help it transfer into it's new role as a food. Everyone is capable of good,it shouldn't take an opportunity for someone to prove them selfs as good after doing wrong to redeem them because not every criminal has an opportunity for righteousness come to them;a good "punishment" or method of force should allow change with the resources to make someone want to be good

A thing that angers me is that a construction worker may be convicted as the same crime as someone famous and rich, and the rich person would be more likely to escape the punishment, whereas the construction worker(while having wronged) still has something productive to do and can contribute to humanity while have  wronged.

But it seems lots of atheists don't think as "moral-ish" type things.(Morality is a construct) Why does it take a liar or "prophet" to tell people to think. This is why i am more proud to an ex-Muslim than just an "atheist". I didn't lose anything from becoming an atheist, rather i reaped all of the good out of religion  and though i no longer write parables and poetry about pleasing a God,i can now think clearly about the things i wrote and no longer be bound by the chains of religion

With that being said, conscious atheists should deter away from the primitive tribalism of religion:the us vs them-the non-believers,the homosexuals, the polytheists, the Jews, the anti-missionaries,those in the synagogue of Satan... and embrace the true power of productive change and build a society that benefits all
