We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

We are even related to plants, let alone the uncircumcised, brethren!

We are very similar before birth!

I sometimes nearly cry when I see an educated person act childishly or with total stupidity. Why hell don't they see what is crystal clear?
I once asked my colleague teachers at a high school the rationale of teaching scientific facts they don't believe or pretend not to see. The answer was sincere: we play it safe to preserve both the daily bread and Heaven!
Chris mentioned how we are all related, but there is more.
While the following figures are not absolute, the fact is we are actually related to almost everything alive:
- Humans 99.5% (including the poor, the ugly, the colored, the Arians, ...)
- Chimpanzees 96% to 98%
- Mice 92%
- Cats 90%
- Dogs 82%
- Cows 80%
- Cats 80%
- Zebrafish 72%
- Chicken 60%
- Bananas 50%
- The fruit fly (Drosophila) 44%
- Yeast 26%
- Rice 25%

After all, the oxygen (that you breathe while praying whatever god you fancy or that the bear breathes while devouring your pet) and other elements in your body is are the same in those flowers in your garden--just the amounts make the difference!

Another time you feel jealous or something about anyone, remember that we are actually "nothing but an electron looking for a place to rest". No room for doing any harm to anyone under whatever pretext.

I get your point, Neal. We need to call the past by its real name, PAST, and move past to it. Slavery, colonialism and the Cold War had their toll, but that's not why kids are not getting good education and many of my neighbors are not using mosquito nets against malaria savaging the area! Mandela was persecuted and Martin Luther King was killed, but this is not a visa to xenophobia! Resources were stolen, but that's not why Haiti is a failed country!

Sure. Thanks Chris

It's a give and take as the facts come in.

As you wrote Science will determine the outcome/facts as we know them today.

You're right Chris. I've found out that "Fruit flies share nearly 60% of human genes" at news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/647139.stm

Thanks for the input. That's what I enjoy. Facts are facts, whatever the course. And I'm never on the side of those suppressing the truth. Keep it up, Chris.

I read an article that said that even grass hoppers can die from freight, another that said that trees emit signals when their leaves are eaten, grass does this as well.

Algie bloom is interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algal_bloom

Having said that, what is intellegence?

Since you asked:

I'm not a geniticist so it's a foreign to me.

It doesn't matter.  Your points about our similaritares are well taken.

Comment by Alexis Habiyaremye on May 26, 2016 at 9:00am

Facts are facts because they can be verified. I didn't verify any of them because it's not in my abilities and means. If you have a more reliable source, feel free to make it public. I'll appreciate it. That's where the difference between religion and science lies. Prove me wrong/right and not do-as-I-say or someone said so! Thanks once again, Chris.

I thought we were more similar to a fruit fly than only 44%.

I enjoy your company Alexis Habiyaremye.

Thanks for your comments and contributions to the group.

I hope I can contribute as much as you.
