We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Fellow atheists. I have not seen the debated clip about toilets, but would still like to share a thought about the subject with you. Let's not forget that the bathroom, as you prefer to put it over there, is a part of the human habitat. We must not be afraid to enter this domain when the urge to give pooh calls upon us. The function of our digestive system sometimes calls for swift action. In Sweden this is less complicated. We have no need to make up strange excuses. The phrase "I will no go to the toilette" is perfectly accepted. The church mandates us to reject the body in order to seek a deeper connection with a non existent god. The toilet can therefore be used as a symbol of sanity, freedom, and independent thinking.
atheistic love to all of you!

Johan, you did not make a fool of yourself! We ended up having a nice discussion, it got interesting; re-read the comments and you'll feel better :-)

And please post some more music, music makes everything better :-)

Your post is fine. We had a nice spirited discussion because of it. =)

Comment by Johan Wåhlander on December 11, 2011 at 5:14am

I was not myself. I promise. Forgive me. I re-read my post today and was very embarrassed.
I'll never write anything in that condition again. You think you're funny- you're daft & stupid.
And… I still havn't seen the video that everyone is taking about. I'm not going to look for it on youtube. I don't want to see it. I'm not fascinated by excrements.
I'm glad to have found this place and I don't want filth in the house either.
There is lunacy and religion. What do?
Argue and use logic = good. Provocation and disrespect = bad.
The church and the human body is a totally different subject. Using the toilet as a symbol for this or that will of course not clarify anything.
Made a fool of myself. I'm sorry.

Reading Kant on a fitness trail is very likely to have you step in said dog shit.

Comment by Michel on December 10, 2011 at 11:15am

I remember distinctly when baby poop first appeared in my life. It was the first time I had to deal with someone else's. I was pretty grossed out. But it didn't last long. It could not last. However I also remember celebrating when it finally became solid =)

Neal, that was funny, dogshit on the fitness trail while reading Kant, you made me choke on my coffee, LOL. In any case, since I am an incorrigible nerd and empiricist, did you guys notice that animal excrement does not gross people out as much as human excrement? Perhaps because we see dogs pooping all the time (and responsible owners like myself have to pick it up, too), because in our culture at least, defecating is something we do always in private, something we actually hide, therefore it seems more taboo. Just another fecal thought.

Comment by Neal on December 10, 2011 at 10:47am

I understand both your thoughts and am glad you took appropriate action.

I will refrain from posting my newest video, "dogshit on the fitness trail," while reading Kant, who I have a hard time understanding anyway. =)

Being the one who started this attack on free speech by flagging the vid when I first saw it, here's my two cents: as much as I am all for letting critters live I still don't want flies in my soup even if they are technically proteins. Same for when a proselytizer barges in a conversation, I can empathize with him but he's never gone too soon.

I'm with Sydni. A shot of feces or two would have totally made the point and could have had the virtue of being funny - trust me I enjoy warped humor - and (judging from the majority response) expose more viewers to Nietzsche's writings. As of now, I'll always associate Nietzsche with defecation - thankfully not the reverse, I tested it =)

--------------

Those of you who might not have seen the video and wanted to freely access Bo's humor here it is on YouTube

Comment by Adriana on December 10, 2011 at 10:13am

Thanks, Jeff, I felt the same way too. And I agree with Sydni also in that it went on and on and it was in the end "poop overload" which detracted from the content or message of the video. I didn't feel outraged (I reserve outrage for social injustices or other types of big injustices, mostly, or something with a moral content; this video was not that). I was grossed out. The same way I'd be grossed out if someone posts a video of a piece of rotten flesh or a pus-filled wound, both festering with maggots, while someone read Nietzsche (or anything else, for that matter). I thought it was totally gross sophomoric humor.

I dislike censorship myself too, but the video is on YouTube, anyone can see it. We are not censoring the video, we are not allowing it on our sites, the same way we don't allow other material or the same way we don't allow certain behaviors. I do not think this is a kin to censorship, it is more analogous to, for example, not allowing someone to smoke in my home. I don't want smoking to be banned, nor do I want to censor the behavior, but if you are staying in my apartment, you will have to smoke in the terrace, because I don't want the smell of smoke in my home.

And frankly, I would allow nudity, pornography (provided there was no violence), etc. on our site provided that it had big warnings as to the content, because many people sign onto this site from the US and if they view that kind of material at work they can get in serious trouble, plus there is also the issue that some people find that disturbing and therefore there should be a warning. I'm not a prude, but in matters of sexuality, we all have different ideas of what if tasteful and what is not tasteful.

The same goes, as Michel said, for images of corpses, people murdered or killed in battle, etc.

This site is like our home, we give it the spin of what we want it to be, what we thing is fitting to represent our site, etc. If we make it fully open to any kind of posting it would soon be chaotic and unappealing, not to mention contentious. And boring. We want our members to be challenged intellectually, to feel welcome, to feel safe, to find likely minds, to exchange ideas. It is not always easy or even possible to please everyone while we to achieve that.

If people feel strongly that Bo needs to have a voice to let his toilet humor video known, I do not mind for him to post a blog describing the video in one or two sentences (with the warning that it is graphic, even though he told me that the prodigious pieces of excrement were fake), and then post a link to the video so that people can judge for themselves if they feel inclined to see the video. We want Bo to feel welcome on our site, too.

Sorry for the long comment.

Of course, Johan didn't make the video. I would never have watched the whole thing except that it seemed to generate attention. Without the attention, if I didn't like what I was seeing, I wouldn't watch.

Apparently most people are happy to see it gone. For myself, I really couldn't build up enough outrage to care. I think it is up to the viewer to watch or not. It was not pornography, it was not a slur on any group except for possibly theists.

I have a distaste for censorship, I think the individual should make up their mind on what is appropriate and what is not, and view/read or not. As far as I'm concerned, no one has the right to tell me what I can see.
