Moving UK-wide art event honours fallen Somme soldiers

1 July 2016

Commuters across the UK were stopped in their tracks this morning as thousands of volunteers dressed in First World War uniforms took part in a unique event to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, organised by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller in collaboration with National Theatre director Rufus Norris. Handing out cards with the names of the fallen, the 'ghost soldiers' were seen at train stations, high streets and thoroughfares, with hundreds of people uploading photos to social media along with the hashtag #wearehere. BBC Arts went behind the scenes with a group of the volunteers in Glasgow earlier today to shed a light on this extraordinary project - watch and find out more below.

Several years ago a former naval officer tried to recruit me into the Navy League here. I told him I had heard that retired admirals are still fighting earlier wars and I didn't want to ally myself with them.

The idiot that during Reagan's presidency (1981-89) wanted a 600-ship navy seemed to not know that:

1) satellites circling the earth will find a surface fleet "hiding" at sea, and

2) one poorly-aimed nuclear bomb can destroy a capital ship.

I read that most of the casualties were due to commanding officers ignoring that German machine guns could fire faster than British rifles and ordering their troops to walk into the German fire.

I understand that one commander ordered his troops to take advantage of trees and many of them survived.
