I know the flag role and due respect. But I thought it could be burned as long as it's yours in the USA. Is Trump missing something with his one-year jail and the like?

Unfortunately for the U.S. and rest of the world Donald Trump is the President Elect.

Trump just talks out of his ass.  If something that he says backfires, he backs down.  If he says something that his followers like, he repeats and expand on it.  If there is a backlash, his apologists explain that he didn't really mean it.

Giving Trump a Twitter account is like giving a machine gun to a monkey.  Sometimes the bullets will hit something.  Other times it's just loud and scary and makes a mess.

Eventually Trump's tweets may diminish, though history shows that other Presidents managed to ignore advice - The separation of powers is faltering as the Imperial presidency gains power.

Next election cycle it will be interesting to see which reality TV star becomes president.

Patriotism isn't the same thing as Nationalism.

From George Will, a conservative, used to be a Republican.. I wonder what he thinks about the Republican Party now.

Nationalism vs. patriotism..

To distribute flack. Chaff.

George F. Will’s statement [“Ukraine: A crisis that matters,” op-ed, Feb. 20] that “nationalism is a necessary, although insufficient impulse sustaining liberty” needs clarifying. Nationalism must be distinguished from patriotism.

Patriotism is fundamental to liberty because pride in one’s nation-state, and a willingness to defend it if necessary, is the basis of national independence. Patriotism is the courage of national self-determination.

By contrast, nationalism is patriotism transformed into a sentiment of superiority and aggression toward other countries. Nationalism is the poisonous idea that one’s country is superior to somebody else’s. Nationalism is intrinsically a cause of war and imperialism.

In the Ukraine conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin is a nationalist imperialist and the Kiev protesters are patriots.

No, Chris; "tabula rasa" refers to a mind free of preconceived ideas. A clean slate.

As to politics, Trump's mind is an empty, or blank, slate.

Nixon's opponents accused him of wanting an imperial presidency.
I know sarcasm doesn't work. It's difficult at times though.
Trumps mind regarding politics isn't "tabula rasa", A.K.A. a clean slate, or free of preconceived ideas.
Aren't Trump's political views based on silver or, in his case guided Neo-liberalism?
It seems he worships Milton Friedman's form of free market based politics.
On draining the swamp. WA DC was built on low lying swamp area. The Don doesn't need to drain it. With his denial of climate change it will flood. As DC floods with Neo-liberal ideals the (venture) vulture capitalist will feed congress to baby vultures who stick their head out the windows of Wall Street as he makes the White House a nesting ground for his personal gain.

Would burning a sock, or other pieces of undergarments representing a flag be considered illegal?

Undergarments representing the flag where people shit and uninate in  is desicration of the flag in my opinion.

I agree that "tabula rasa" and 'newborn babies' have no preconcieved notions.

Adolescence is where where the cloth is dyed to match the color of the people cleansing the child of innocence.

Search on "patriotism as religion" for some reading you may find interesting.

And yes, both are superstitions.
