Bible read-along #1 Rahab and God's terrorists

In the book of Joshua,God sends Spies to a city called Jericho, then they are spotted by a woman named Rahab hides these 2 spies. They tell her that God is going to destroy the city,so she hides them because it is "God's will". They make a pact with her and the Isrealites agree to allow her and her family to leave before the Isrealites  pillage Jericho. Afterwards, the high-priests carry the ark of the covenant round for 6 days, and then on the seventh day, they blow the horns which cause the city walls to fall down and they are told to pillage the city, except for the riches which are for God alone.

Before this, they are told to not make a battle cry until told,so i suppose  this is a lesson about humility. The most Just being in all existence then says to not rebuild this city or whoever does this will loose their firstborn and be cursed. Some isrealites break the commandant about the riches and God curses them and they loose a battle. Joshua prays and God tells him to get rid of the source of contamination(which happens by stoning and burning)

Has anyone actually believed this shit is holy ,what the fuck? In trying to understand the bible in an optimistic way,but I'm finding it extremely difficult. What if ISIS came over to woman in Isreal and told her that she and her family is safe if she obeys just because it is God's will to destroy her people, would this be a great example of faith. What the fuck am i reading. I want someone who believed or (believes) in the shit to explain how they view and interpret this fucked up story

Clayton, based upon a chatbox with you, and some of your remarks here, i want to point out that the anger you "seem to" have about realizing all of this is baloney, is not altogether uncommon when one FIRST becomes godless.  Some of us, upon realizing we have been lied to and bamboozled, do feel angry.  Like wtf!!??
but, that passes. (it should anyway, if not? seek professional help with a counselor for sustained or severe anger, not a bad idea, there are atheist counselors, too).
it "seems to me" Clayton, it may be, you are spending too much time and energy "trying to" make sense out of the various bibles, holy books of all kinds, torah, etc.
long story short,
they do not make sense,Clayton.

You will end up exhausted and frustrated trying to make sense or use logic to understand these books of fiction.
YOu have a right to spend your days doing that, trying to use logic to understand holy books, but, it is a fruitless waste of time, in my opinion.  Only way to use the holy books (does NOT matter which specific holy book or religion) is to use "faith", that is, cherry-picking the parts you DO like,

and glossing over allllllllll those "other" parts that are cruel, nonsensical, ridiculous, etc.   People who DO like to believe the holy books, when confronted with all the ridiculous parts of the book, often respond with
A)  error in translation
B)  Not being interpreted correctly by reader
C)  It was a different era back then (but..but, wouldn't a gods' morality be timeless and always good?)
D)  You will be brushed off with "OH, just ask gods when you get to heaven"
E)  Distraction, (moves topic to another verse and does not truly reply to your point)
F)  Anger, towards you.   Hoping the anger will cause you to drop subject. (this anger from religious people when their story is doubted is common, and if you do not elicit anger on round one of your remarks, duck! cuz it is coming on round two then...)
G) they stomp off and offer pity for your soul, as you will not be invited to the party in the sky for dead people.
H) Glee, as the religious person seems happy to consider you burning in hell.  (this response is always creepy to me, as i could not imagine feeling glee about anyone being burned)
I) all of the above, and about 100 others that i have not thought of to add here.

...........basically, you come to realize that facts do not matter to religious people.  For many religious people? their 'feelings' ARE evidence....

you can not use logic on them.  If you could? there would be no religious people.

but my point is,
you can not successfully use LOGIC to understand the holy books.   YOu do not even have to try.

good luck,

and do feel free to post about your feelings and thoughts as you seem to be finding you do not believe in the gods....  it can be a bit of a process if you have been indoctrinated for years, and you may feel any myriad of responses in your mind to trying to see the world

it is both freeing and exhilarating and many of us also initially did feel some loss or even sadness or even anger that we had been misled.  the religious community is a loss for some of us, and even our family dynamics may not quite fit the way it used to be for some of us.

so, let us know what you are wondering about or thinking about if you want to.  good luck.

For what it's worth the 200 section is religion. The 100 section is phylosophy.

I found at this site for books an Israeli historian who categorically nixes the Jericho massacre. Excellent work. Very sane. Very secular. There are other Israeli's - too lazy to look for them in my bookcases- which also deletes Exodus in fact all of the Torah. Which means the Old Testament. A horror story in itself. Great research your stuff
