We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

'Mummy, can you spray my face white?'-

Isn't this the saddest story you've heard in a long time.

How can a society that call's itself civilised make a child feel like that? When are we going to reach that time when the colour of a child's skin won't matter.

I understand that some people use lotions or supplements to dye their skin.

It may look orangy like the actor George Hamilton.

Tanning booths may be used by political reality personalities. A trademark of that may be the oval whiteness around the orbs of their eyes.

When I was a kid I went for a walk and saw a guy oiled up (maybe to enhance the UV intensity) laying on a lounge chair on his front yard.  I must have given him a weird look. It appeared odd to me that he was 'tanning'  that way in public.  He leaped out of the lounge chair and  said in a threatening way "What the fuck are you looking at?"

That was creepy to me as a kid - its even creepier now that I'm remembering it.

Hopefully whatever that guy's problem was he came to know himself better and calm down, or is in prison so he doesn't hurt anyone.

On surveys and censuses when asked what race I am I answer other.  If amoeba, or wart on the belly of a worm was an option I'd check that box.

When I volunteered to go overseas the dispatcher asked me what religion I was. I told him none of the above.  The look and tone of his voice was amazing as he asked.

"You aren't an atheist are you?"

I reaffirmed to him to check the "None of the above" box - while thinking to my self my religious beliefs are none of your business.

Thinking about that it reminds me of the  creepy sun tanner.

Imagine all those years when we laid out in the sun without any sun cream.

I read that fake tanning for too long can make you get headaches, real tanning damages your skin and can give you cancer, skin bleaching can damage your kidneys which can be life threatening.

As for white people wanting to get a tan, it used to thought that it looked healthy. We know better now don't we.

You're right Mrs.B why is this still a thing? Shameful.

Why, oh why, is it still like this?

Comment by Chris on July 12, 2018 at 3:33pm

Isn't it interesting how white people want to get a tan (to become brown)?

Your so right Suzanna it's important that kids are allowed to grow up feeling good about themselves.

So sad, representation matters whether it's people of colour, disability, lgbt or girls who aren't princesses, too many kids books have the depressing storylines that I grew up with. There are some that are inclusive but they aren't the usual. Cerrie Burnell's books are pretty good too show diversity.
