The new Secular Party of America bids a fond adieu to the National Atheist Party

On August 1st at 12am Eastern standard time our party, which has been known as the “National Atheist Party” since March of 2011, will undergo a transformation that will help focus us on the journey ahead. Our new designation was overwhelmingly selected by a “supermajority” of the members who voted to change the name to the far more inclusive and politically motivated “Secular Party of America.”

With such a monumental change, there is obviously much to do: new logos,…

Putting 'Absolute Truth' into Context

Slavery is wrong. Rape is wrong. Homophobia is wrong... The list goes on - and there aren't too many around in 'enlightened' society who'd disagree, because, generally speaking, people are better than their holy books (and their Gods).

This is obviously a very good thing. If it weren't the case, civilisation (if we could call it that) would be an immensely violent, fearful, unjust place. Your daughter gets raped? Marry her to the rapist. Someone steals a…

Ethnography and religion series

I am a sociologist with an interest in religious practice (as well as deviance and crime, medicine and organisations).

I have some free time coming up in September.

I am thinking about running a sociological experiment.

I want to attend as many different types of religious services as possible.

My intention is to attend but not participate and just take notes during the services. I would introduce myself if approached after the services are finished. At…

Everyday Religious Practice 1: Ambiguity and Ambivalence in Buddhist Shintoism practice in Japan

Everyday Religious Practice 1:

Ambiguity and Ambivalence in Buddhist Shintoism practice in Japan– Justin Murray

I have set myself the target of experiencing as many religious practices as he can in order to better understand the theist position. In this post I advance the idea that the typical Japanese person has an ambivalent and ambiguous attitude towards religion, and that this…

Against all gods

I think the question of the existence of god or the concept of god should not be treated under the sciences, sciences taken broadly, but should be left in the purview of metaphysicians and at the very best theologians. The only reason I see why anything god should occupy the domain of science is when theologians claim that god does act or cause somethings to act in a certain way in the universe which I still think is granting them too much.

Time, I think, has come to honestly tell…

God Does NOT (NOT) Exist

Originally posted by kaustubhmathur

Atheism is not a negation of anything. You don’t have to negate what no one can prove exists. No, atheism is a very positive affirmation of man’s ability to think for himself, to do for himself, to find answers to his own problems.

It's Better that I Die...You too

cemetary

I am going to die. There have been times in my life when this fact scared me. Two unknown details of my demise still have the power to worry my weary mind: when and how. I don't want to die young, before my children have grown and blossomed. I wouldn't prefer a painful death. Other than that, the certainty of my finality no longer fills me with introspective angst.

Most humans are brought up with…

Name Change for National Atheist Party Means New Focus and Appeal

Originally posted by DividedUnderGod

For over two years, the National Atheist Party has been a small political party recruiting members from the atheist community through social media, namely Facebook and Twitter. Despite the name of the party and religious affiliation of most of its membership, the NAP’s focus was not aimed at promoting atheism or…

How the Name Kills Our Aim (Part 4): 12 advantages to voting for the “Secular Party of America”

Andrea Quinn

@AtheistOnWheels

The “National Atheist Party” appeals to the rebel in many of us but if we want to be true rebels we will work within, rather than allow ourselves to be pummeled by, the system.

I'm proud to call myself an Atheist and it will always be my term of choice when describing myself, but at this point…

10 years of injustice (support her)

My story is long and can be toxic. Take your time in reading it (my blog) and please get to know who I am. (The youtube clip is about why I left Saudi not why I am doing this fundraiser.) The reason I am doing a fundraiser is because of the fact that I have been disowned. Financial stability has been the primary struglle and the…

What’s in a Name? Atheism and the Stigma of Labels

“It is worth noting that no one ever needs to identify himself as a non-astrologer or a non-alchemist. Consequently, we do not have words for people who deny the validity of these pseudo-disciplines. Likewise, atheism is a term that should not even exist. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make when in the presence of religious dogma.” – Sam Harris,…

Did the prosecution prove its case in the Zimmerman trial?

Well, it has been a while since we've talked about the Zimmerman case. Now that we're halfway through the trial I was just wondering if feelings about this have changed since the great "Jumping To Conclusions Festival" of 2012. Do you think the prosecutors proved their case? Do you still think this is only a case of Zimmerman being guilty of shooting someone walking through his neighborhood while black?

Richard Feynman - My Kind of Scientist

I've been meaning to write a 'love letter' to this man for a while, so here it is.

I'll begin with a quote:

“I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers that might be wrong. If we will only allow that, as we progress, we remain unsure, we will leave opportunities for…

Good Without God?

"I think the idea that it is immoral not to believe in God is perhaps the most insidious one that parents encourage to take root in the minds of young children. It is what makes it so difficult for people to question the existence of God once they have acquired the ability to think and reason for themselves..." - Alom Shaha, The Young Atheist's Handbook.

It's a very common theist standpoint, pairing off immorality with…
