The last Canadian blasphemy offense that went to court was against a reverend in 1935. Doesn't appear to be enforced, but should be gone.

Pastor told to return to Islam – or die

Pastor told to return to Islam – or die

THERE have been numerous twists and turns in the case of Yousef Nadarkhani, a Christian pastor sentenced to death in Iran for apostasy … or blasphemy … or a breach of security. It’s not clear which.

Meanwhile, closer to home, the BBC reports that British Conservative MP Mike Freer had first-hand experience of Islamic “tolerance” when he found himself trapped in a North Finchley mosque.

The Finchley and Golders Green MP, a member of the Conservative Friends of Israel, had gone to the mosque on Friday to hold a constituency surgery. He said he was forced to wait for police behind a locked door after he was threatened by a group of men, one of whom called him a:

Jewish homosexual pig.

The trouble began after messages on the Muslims Against Crusades website (which appears to have stopped functioning properly this morning) urged supporters to target him, he said.

Mr Freer said a message posted ahead of the incident on the site made reference to Labour MP Stephen Timms, who was stabbed while holding a surgery in east London last year.

It warned the attack on Mr Timms should serve as a “piercing reminder” to politicians that:

Their presence is no longer welcome in any Muslim area.

The message also stated that “as a member of the Conservative Party”, Mr Freer had:

The blood of thousands of Muslims on his hands.

Muslim MP would support fresh UK blasphemy laws

Labour MP Keith Vaz, above, who, in 1989, led a march of several thousand Muslims demanding that Salman Rushdie’s book The Satanic Verses be banned, says he would have ‘no problem’ with the recriminalisation of ‘blasphemy’ in the UK.

Following a Muslim Council of Britain conference last week entitled “Exploring the issues of extremism and examine credible responses to the issues of terrorism”, Vaz, who addressed the conference, was quoted by Al Arabiya News

It must be pretty obscure because I never heard of it until just a few days ago.

Comment by Stephen on January 14, 2016 at 18:02

This I didn't know Andy. I assumed you did the same as us and got rid of the blasphemy laws. What the hell is going on there. Very odd.

Comment by Andy Stout on January 14, 2016 at 17:57

It is outrageous that in the 21st century we still have judges in a position of authority to rule on charges of blasphemy! In Canada we have a blasphemy law which carries a 2 year prison sentence. What a disgrace.

When our Prime Minister indignantly speaks out against the terrorist attacks in Paris, I want to blush. What right has Canada to criticize acts religious intolerance, when we, ourselves, sport a blasphemy law virtually indistinguishable from those whom we so righteously condemn? The hypocrisy!

Why the Church of England is in decline

The church has failed to capitalise on its tally of advantages, and people are now cynical about the organisation

Archbishop Justin Welby

I can show you why the Church of England is completely fucked," said the vicar. He showed me an email he had just received from the diocesan authorities about his "continuing ministerial development" – in effect his annual performance review. It came with 20 attachments, from A to T, 19 of which he was supposed to read before filling out the form on how well he was doing.

Bishop Ball case: Questions for Lord Carey

With the release of some of the letters written in support of Bishop Ball during the 1992-1993 police investigation, particularly those written by prominent people, we're starting to see more clearly how Ball was protected, writes legal specialist on child abuse Richard Scorer.

MARYAM NAMAZIE: Why I had to face down the bullies trying to silenc...

This week marked the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris.

The atrocity was a brutal attack not just on human life but also on the principle of free speech, one of the pillars of human civilisation. In the aftermath of the killings, people across the world united to express their support for that essential liberty.

Yet today, freedom of speech in British universities is under heavier assault than ever before.
