Remembering the seafarers who defied the fascist blockade of Spanish ports

JIM JUMP tells the story of British seafarers who traded with Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War

NEXT month sees the unveiling in Glasgow of a memorial to British seafarers who braved fascist bombs and U-boats – and the British government’s appeasement of Franco, Hitler and Mussolini – to trade with Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War

Thanks must go to rail and maritime union RMT and its Glasgow Shipping Branch for raising the money for a memorial to the crews of British ships who risked and in some cases gave their lives to break Franco’s blockade of Spanish Republican ports. Designed by sculptor Frank Casey, the memorial will stand proudly across the Clyde from Arthur Dooley’s landmark Pasionaria memorial to the more than 500 Scots of the International Brigades.

Colourizing doesn't always work but when it does it can bring the subjects back to life in a really meaningful way.

Such a lot of work, but I'm sure it would have made the movie more realistic in appearance. Yes, our world does have colour so I've never understood the need for the black & whites.

I don't have photoshop but there are some online colorizing apps.  So far they seem quite limited.  They produce a sprt of "color washed".  Here is a photo from on-line that I processed using a colorizing app.

Before

After I wanted to colorize some images from 1800s and early 1900s from family albums, but not sure yet that I like the results. Here is one of those. It was very faded and very small. I ran it through Picasa photo editing program to enlarge and up the contrast, then a colorizing app. The app does not attempt True color" but rather adds color based on what it perceives as skin, or sky, or grass etc.  This was taken roughly 1895, my grandfather's siblings.  The boy died shortly after the photo, childhood disease.

I recently watched "They shall not grow old", the movie made with restored and enhanced - much of it colorized - footage from WWI and UK at that time.  The narration was entirely the voices of those who were in the trenches at the time, recorded years later but in their own voices.  Voice and sound was given to the restored film, by having lip readers translate their facial movements, then usung voice actors who came from the same communities.  Taken together, this was a stunning movie.  It totally humanized what had been a shadowy, distant history lesdon from old books, made it real and incredibly poignant.

There are people who criticize colorizing, but as Peter Jackson said about the movie, these people lived in a world of color.  As do we.  It's one thing to colorize domething that was black and white as an artistic statement.  It's entirely different to take what was a tecnological limitation, and fill it eith light and meaning and make it something that we can really feel.  That colorized Auschwitz photo is truly haunting,

I always knew that beer drinking in England had a long pedigree.

'First British beer' discovered in Cambridgeshire A14 roadworks
Road workers have uncovered what is thought to be the earliest evidence of beer being brewed in Britain, dating back more than 2,000 years.

I add colour to Auschwitz registration photos to educate people about the Holocaust

I’ve been colourising photos professionally since 2015. From Lenin to Winston Churchill; from the Titanic leaving port in 1912 to the Battle of Verdun. I have covered hundreds of years and added colour to iconic photos and to those in which the subjects will forever remain anonymous. But it was colourising the photo of Czeslawa Kwoka in 2016 that had the biggest impact. Czeslawa, pictured above, was a 14-year-old girl who was killed in Auschwitz. She was a Polish Roman Catholic and was murdered one month after the death of her mother.

So many still say it never happened.

The Internet has allowed the Holocaust deniers to crawl out of the woodwork. We must never forget what racism and antisemitism can do if we let it.
