Doubtful News

I feel bad for the turtles

A completely credulous, poorly researched, biased and kind of silly article about acupuncture for sea turtles. Acupuncture helps hypothermic turtles – Quincy, MA – The Patriot Ledger. Two endangered sea turtles that are shells of their former selves after getting stranded on Cape Cod during a cold spell are getting some help easing back into the wild – from an acupuncturist. Dexter and Fletcher Moon, juvenile Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, remained calm as acupuncturist Claire McManus gently tapped more than a dozen needles into their grayish-green, leathery skin during a therapy session intended to decrease inflammation and swelling on their front flippers, restore a full range of motion on those limbs and help the animals regain their appetites. McManus, the acupuncturist, was restrained when describing her reaction to the results. “It makes me feel very happy,” McManus said. “Acupuncture is not alternative to conventional medicine – they are also receiving Western treatments as well, but the fact that it can work in conjunction with the other treatments they are getting makes me very happy.” Our regular reader David Wood also sent us this story. He notes the writer incorrectly calls the turtles “mammals”. (They are reptiles.) “There aren’t a lot [...]

Flustered over the Pope’s impromptu exorcism

What did he JUST DO? The pope and the devil: Is Francis an exorcist? The question has bubbled up ever since Francis laid his hands on the head of a young man in a wheelchair after celebrating Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. The young man heaved deeply a half-dozen times, shook, then slumped in his wheelchair as Francis prayed over him. The television station of the Italian bishops’ conference reported Monday that it had surveyed exorcists, who agreed there was “no doubt” that Francis either performed an exorcism or a prayer to free the man from the devil. This AP piece, available on several websites mentions that Francis often speaks of the devil. The church stance is conservative with regards to exorcism, not making it a Hollywood production and urging caution. While the affliction of the young man who received the Pope’s attention is not mentioned in the article (whether he was mentally disabled as well as physically), if that is the case, it harkens back to mistaken ideas about possession causing such conditions. Whether he did or did not perform an exorcism also is not officially stated by the church. UPDATE: The Vatican says no. Or something. Apparently [...]

Children suffering abuse in Congo, accused of witchcraft

The youngest, most defenseless, suffer the most. DR Congo’s Withcraft Epidemic: 50,000 Children Accused of Sorcery – IBTimes UK. There are around 50,000 children being held in churches in the Democratic Republic of Congo accused of witchcraft, a BBC film team has discovered. Branded a Witch shows Kevani Kanda exploring the secretive world of faith-based child abuse, where children are physically assaulted because a church leader believes they possess “kindoki” or magic powers. The documentary explores the increase in the number of children abused and murdered by relatives in the name of driving out demons. Kanda, who was born in the DRC, looks to establish how ancient traditions have resulted in children being singled out for abuse. Children are branded witches or possessed as a result of ignorance for normal medical or mental illnesses. In some cases, it almost seems random as a Pastor may just see a “spirit” in a child. We’ve seen the case of Kristy Bamu, a teen murdered by abusive relatives in the name of witchcraft. And we see the most innocent as victims of a hyped belief in demons that can be eradicated by violent exorcisms. This is modern times. But not everywhere. Exposure about [...]

The prosecutors' office in the Swiss canton (state) of Aargau confirmed Wednesday that the woman died in the town of Wolfhalden in eastern Switzerland.

Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reports that a woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual diet that required her to stop eating or drinking and live off sunlight alone.

The Zurich newspaper reported Wednesday that the unnamed Swiss woman in her fifties decided to follow the radical fast in 2010 after viewing an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years.

Tages-Anzeiger says there have been similar cases of self-starvation in Germany, Britain and Australia.

The prosecutors' office in the Swiss canton (state) of Aargau confirmed Wednesday that the woman died in January 2011 in the town of Wolfhalden in eastern Switzerland.

Contrary to what certain major Hollywood studios, governments and mass media try to make us believe, extraterrestrial visitors always have peaceful and respectful intentions.

"This follows a universal law governing interstellar expeditions: The ability to visit other humanities depends solely on a humanity's ability to conquer its self-destructive aggressiveness."
