It makes total sense that, as people start eating less meat (not really turning vegetarian nor vegan, but eating a lot more meatless dishes), restaurants would adapt and that would bring a boon to all of us veggie-eaters as well. Good news for the…Continue

Comment by Adriana on June 13, 2012 at 11:41am I don't think people eat less meat now: meat has become cheaper. Dairy, too. Processed crappy foods are actually the cheapest.

Comment by Davy on June 10, 2012 at 10:59am From what I have read on pain. Pain is part of the survival mechanism of of a multi-celled organism as when there is something injurious to the organism in its environment and it comes in contact with it the organism feels pain so moves away from the source that is causing the pain.
Filter feeders such as oysters, mussels, pippis etc not only collect heavy metals from their environment but also harmful bacteria. I can remember back in the late 80's when Port Stephens oyster growers could not sell their oysters because of contamination from poorly treated effluent entering the waters in which they grow their oysters.
@Doone. With the in season charts where are they geographically related to? Or are they covering the whole northern Hemisphere?

Comment by Neal on June 8, 2012 at 6:53am With reports of heavy metals in oysters out of the gulf after the horizon spill, it wouldn't be the healthiest food one could find.

Comment by Adriana on June 7, 2012 at 12:39pm Bivalves don't have a brain but they do have a nervous system with pairs of ganglia. They can react to the environment, obviously. As to whether they can feel pain, it's very, very hard to tell. They can detect harm in the environment, and react to predators, water changes, etc. But does this mean that they "feel" like other organisms do? Most vegans argue that, in case that they do feel pain, and given that in our society, we do not need to eat them for nutrition, it's best to refrain from eating them. There are similar discussions with lobsters and crabs and boiling them alive. Although they do have a CNS.
