We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

I was inspired by vegan.com's facebook page to start a similar list here of things you might now know as vegetarians/vegans that you thought were wrong or not possible as omnivores.

 

A naive presumption I had once during a meat eating phase was that "the government" or "authorities" were talking care to ensure animal abuses did not occur. I felt it was inconceivable that they would fail to monitor the meat industry properly and even be complicit in its cruelties. Talk about dumb.

I don't know as I really even thought about governments role in regulating the "cruelty footprint" on the meat industry when I was an omnivore.

Honestly, I think I was even dumber than dumb! LOL

Ok, so...

I didn't have any presumptions about eating meat and agribusiness. It's so well hidden and "not talked about" in the media.

Veganism is like atheism in a way. People look at you like you from another planet.

When I was a kid, I thought cows were drugged so they didn't feel anything when they were slaughtered. You see, I have always been an animal lover, but I loved steaks and had to believe stuff like that to keep eating them.

 

Another myth is that if you were vegetarian, you would be flabby because you wouldn't get enough protein for your muscles.

i am currently an omnivore, but, lived much of my life as a vegan, then a pesce, lacto-ovo vegan, (even once was co-owner of a The VeggieTable across from my college), and then i just went omnivore when i had kids..

 

i *still* have a myth, maybe you all can help me with--"Vegetarians do not get enough B12 in their diet".

 

I am sort of considering going back to being a pesce vegetarian....

 

 

I take "vegetarian" to mean someone who still consumes dairy and eggs. People on that diet would get enough B12 because eggs and dairy have plenty of it. Also, these days lots of foods--anything from energy bars to tofu--are fortified with vitamins such as B12. Vegans are the ones that need to supplement for their B12. Ginny Messina's site has some good solid advice about it.  

As far as I'm concerned, it's just not an issue. B12 is stored in your liver so you can take one supplement with 2000 micrograms a week. Here is another good site that backs that up. Most people would probably get a bit from fortified foods as well. In my case, I probably get too much without hardly trying!

 

Apart from this, it should be noted that everyone is different and deficiencies might occur for different reasons other than diet. Omnivores are not immune from B12 deficiency, either. A B12 deficiency is more common in the elderly. However, I read someone that elderly omnivores are more likely to have this deficiency than elderly veg*ns, probably because veg*ns are more mindful of the B12 issue and regularly supplement into old age. Maybe someone can verify that for us.   

Interestingly, vitamin B12 comes from bacteria, not from meat. For vegans, nori (seaweed) is a good source (link). I love nori and i eat it like a snack.

 

Noticeably, what are healthy vitamin levels continues to shift; remember the vitamin D story? It's still not clear how much one needs.

Oh, i have never had this Nori. 

Well, that is good to know, i will have to learn more about it.

 

(yeah, that Vit D thing, i SAW that going down, i did!  I kept wanting to ask everyone, "Why are you doing this??"

  i bet, somewhere, some marketting team at some pharmacy cranking out Vit d pills, decided to get rich...that is my bet on how that all came about..)
