I first came upon the guitar virtuosity of Don Ross courtesy of NPR's Morning Edition and their practice of using interstitial music between segments.  An email to one of their hosts regarding some extraordinary guitar music I had heard one morning provided identification of this skilled artist and his warming work.

I hope you enjoy.

Ages ago, I collected a performance of the Prokofiev 3rd Piano Concerto, with The Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conducting, and Gary Graffman at the keyboard.  On the flip side of that record was a work I had never heard before: Prokofiev's FIRST Piano Concerto, which had been his graduation piece from the St. Petersburg Conservatory.  I almost instantly fell in love with the energy of the piece: the bold statement of the primary theme in the first movement, the thoughtful reflection of the second, and a third movement featuring a virtuoso piano solo and explosive coda.

Please enjoy the third movement of this work, with Vladimir Ashkenazy conducting and soloist Yefim Bronfman.

Would never guess who it was if it didn't say so.

It isn't very often that Joni Mitchell would cover someone else's work, but when she did, there was no doubt about who was singing and her utter focus on the quality of the product she was producing.  That said, listen to the following, and you tell me: If Etta James heard her classic so rendered, do you think she'd approve?

I do.

Quite emotional.
