The Myth of the "Violent Left"

That petition is bloody stupid. Total waste of space.

How typical of the right to do something like this.

Sign the petition to formally recognize Antifa as a terrorist group. 100,000 signatures were needed, there is currently 233k+ signatures and is quickly growing. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/formally-recognize-antifa...

During that 1974 Republican primary I met many conservatives. They seemed like warm-hearted folk and a few invited me to visit their churches.

For 17 years I'd been a committed agnostic. I thanked them and said something like "I have a different faith." They seemed to understand and no one inquired further.

Fundamentalists had not yet taken over the Party.

Two years later I ended my computer career and moved to San Francisco. I met many liberal folk and they seemed indifferent.

"Some Republicans are mean and some Democrats are dumb."

Is that true?

For "mean" above, write "impatient realists". For "dumb" above "naive idealists".

Some Republicans are impatient realists and some Democrats are naïve idealists. That accounts for the sometimes noisy meanness and the sometimes noisy dumbness.

In the early 1970s, in Phoenix, I was a Republican working for a computer manufacturer. In 1974, hoping to defeat a Republican legislator whose interests were in agriculture, I decided to run.

Before WW2, irrigated agriculture was Arizona’s principal economic activity. The war brought young men there for air force training and companies manufacturing military equipment. Many of the men liked what they saw and after the war returned to raise families. Many companies, attracted by the trained workforce, also stayed and by the 1960s manufacturing had replaced agriculture.

Economic change foreshadows political change and many legislators had agricultural interests, which now included home building on what had been agricultural land. I worked for a computer manufacturer in Florida until a downturn resulted in my going to a Texas company. A downturn there resulted in an offer from the Phoenix branch of the Florida company. I accepted the offer so my wife and I went to Phoenix. We found a house in a district whose voters had sent a scion of an agricultural family to the legislature.

In the primary I won six times as many votes as most first time candidates but half as many as the incumbent. Had I won, a progressive Republican would have replaced a  conservative Republican.

Funny thing about Kevin Drum - he reported on a survey back in April that found there are 0 Republican atheists. Republican Atheists wrote him a message to potentially do a follow up report about us but he has yet to respond.

lol to each their own I guess. I didn't think too much of my first boss who unfriended me on FB when I was 18 because he learned my favorite author is Ayn Rand. That wasn't very nice :( I've dealt with left leaning folk harassing me for my admiration for Rand ever since.
