We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

What atheist movies have you seen? By atheist movies I don't mean just every movie that has nothing related to god/religion in it. No documentaries.

I think I need a hint here - do you have a list that we can review? I am drawing a blank.

For now, I can think of a few movies I have seen.

Inherit the Wind, Contact, Whatever Works, You Don't Know Jack, The Invention of Lying, The Man From Earth, Agora, Creation, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, The Mist.

I don't think these are all the atheist movies I have seen... I just posted some that I remember.

Crap, I can't think of others now.

Definitely Life of Brian then...

Can you think of similar movies to those I have mentioned that you have seen, and perhaps enjoyed?
Ricky Gervais invents a belief in the afterlife and therefore religion by inventing LYING!

Movies for atheists, secular humanists, non church goers.

A Listmania! list by James R. Taylor
(REAL NAME)   http://www.amazon.com/Movies-atheists-secular-humanists-church/lm/R...
The list author says: "Here is our idiosyncratic movie list for all free thinkers, atheists, secular humanists,
non church goers, people for separation of church and state and all independent thinkers.
This is a starter list and in no way suggests completion.
The purpose of this list is to provide a resource for movies that deal in some way with secularism versus sectarianism, faith versus reason, liturgical literalisms versus scientific principals and common sense, theocracy versus democracy, etc.
Some are not atheism, agnosticism, or anti-clericalism per se, but we have included them for their independent and skeptical viewpoint. Many of the films are warnings
about accepting someone’s fantasy as fact without engaging in a reality check.
Some show the dire consequences of following theocratic thinking and rules to an extreme.
These are titles that can cause one to question the given order of society, the nature of religion, the assumed righteousness of a corrupt power structure, and the evils of sectarianism.
We have culled many atheist, agnostic, humanist and etc. websites for titles of an independent nature, and added many others from years of film viewing."

it was the most useful thing the Gods had ever given them - a real labor saving device.

Nice list. I would like to say that The Wicker Man with Nicolas Cage is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The original was much better, and it should be the one recommended.

And Planet of the Apes was great. Again, the original.

Does anyone agree that it would have been a much better film if they wouldn't have focused so much on that silly love story? It's still funny, but they had the opportunity of making something awesome. With that love story they got stuck at the standard level of pretty much all romantic comedies you see nowadays.
It was a good concept but as you say they did not fully explore the ramifications of lying and religion.  The society without lying was also not fully thought out - a SF writer could have done much better.
