How did cannabis rank so high? I will have to look at it closer.

From Pharyngula:

We do not have a rational drug policy. There are potent and dangerous drugs that are socially accepted because hey, we’ve always drunk alcohol and smoked cigarettes, while there are milder, far less dangerous drugs that are damned because they’re new and unfamiliar. And so we throw people in prison for long jail terms if they are caught with some marijuana, while people can go out every weekend and drink themselves into an abusive, obnoxious state, and we just tell them they’re cool.

It is possible to take an objective look at the effects of various drugs on individua..., and ask “where’s the harm?” Here’s an example, the dangers of an array of drugs characterized and ranked.

There’s lots of small print there, so you may have to click to embiggen, but I can tell you what the extremes are: alcohol is the worst, and psychoactive mushrooms are the least. Heroin and meth are bad, LSD and Ecstasy are among the least dangerous.

And there are good biological reasons for this ranking.

yep, insane. yep traditionaly juries can find anyone they want innocent, but in this day of "directions" from judges, i dunno. theres a famous story that when england was executing people for stealing anytrhing. the juries woke up and started finding everyone innocent and the law was changed

I agree with you, Neal, 100%.

Marijuana laws suck. Thought I posted an article somewhere about how juries can decide someone is not guilty, even though the evidence says they are, when they think the law unjust. Selling 30 dollars of pot and going to jail is a crime in itself. Whoever did the sentencing should be the one locked up.

Comment by Sydni Moser on December 27, 2011 at 6:18pm

In 2010, Patricia Spottedcrow, a mother of four from Oklahoma, was sentenced to an astounding 12 years in prison for a $31 pot sale. In October, a judge modified her sentence, reducing her jail time to what is still a stunning 8 years behind bars. Spottedcrow's attorney, Josh Welch, told KFOR, "Nobody understands why this woman is serving this long of a sentence for this type of crime. Look at other states; you can commit this same crime and it's not illegal. That's insane. She sold $30 of marijuana for gas money and food money for her family. It's stupid. It's wrong. But you don't go to prison for eight or 12 years for that. You shouldn't go to prison period."
