Welcome to It Gets Better

Bullying and teen suicide are nothing new, but in recent years we have become increasingly aware of the damage bullying does ― to both children and adults alike ― with what seems to be a sudden spike in teen suicides related to being bulled.

The death of a child, particularly at his or her own hands, is never acceptable. It is a blight on human society that schools do not do more to prevent this, that parents can raise their children to be mean and spiteful to others, and that bullied kids don't have a support system on which they can rely when they are faced with feelings of despair and isolation.

The content of this group will undoubtedly be difficult to deal with. It is painful to see children ostracized from their peers, and made to feel as if they don't matter or don't belong. Of course, bullying is not confined to schools, either. Many adults experience bullying at home or in the workplace as well. All these issues will be explored in this group.

I've been bullied at school as a kid because I was always socially awkward.  I know one family who's kid with autism was horribly bullied in school and got very depressed.  Between the priests and this, the Church isn't exactly showing its concern for children.

As far as I'm concerned, all religions just need to STFU. We've had 2,000 years and more of their nonsense and yet they've never provided a shred of proof that their original premise -- that god exists -- is true.

Ah ok!  Yeah, I will sometimes cross-post between the two sites.

Oh, sorry GP, you posted that on AN as well. I got confused and crossposted here for a second.

Just added an apropos post to my blog.

Catholic Parents: Oh No! Don't Give Our Children The Gay!

Probably been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but there is considerable controversy in Canada because the Conservatives and Liberals are trying to pass legislation that would force Catholic (public) schools to allow gay/lesbian clubs and create environments that are safe and inclusive to all sexual orientations.   Of course, that's unthinkable for the Catholic Church.

Canadian Trans Teen’s Sudden Death May Have Been Bullying-Related Suicide

The small town of Chatham, Ontario has been rocked by the sudden death of Coltyn Mayrand, a 16-year-old trans teen who passed away Saturday night.

There is some question, though, as to the cause of Mayrand’s death: He’s believed to have committed suicide, though no official report has been made public. And though family members admit Coltyn was bullied for being trans, they say it wasn’t the root of his problems:

“As much as bullying is a terrible thing, and may have affected Coltyn, we do not believe that bullying played a large part in our loss of Coltyn,” posted Page Elizabeth Mayrand on Facebook. “We appreciate the kind thoughts and words, but we don’t need everyone out there putting blame and criticisms on anyone, for any reasons.”

NEWS FLASH

PAT ROBERTSON: 14-YEAR-OLD ‘DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HER SEXUALITY IS’ | Responding to a mother who caught her 14-year-old daughter “engaged in unsavory acts” with a female friend, Pat Robertson said today that she probably “doesn’t know what her sexuality is” but “it’s unlikely at that age that she has homosexual tendencies.” If the mother wants to “revert” her daughter’s behavior, Robertson believes she should prevent her from seeing her friend anymore and explain to her what the Bible says. Watch it:

Contrary to Robertson’s belief, studies show that young people are often aware of their sexuality by early adolescence even without any sexual experiences, occurring on average between the ages of 9 and 11. (HT:RightWingWatch.)

Yes, i have read about Japanese bullying and the high suicide rate, among teenagers especially. Very sad.

Comment by Carl Pastor on January 23, 2012 at 5:57pm

at least america is trying to do sumpin about this prob. here in japan bullying seems to be all over.  not anti gay  but the new kid or the short kid or the non athletic kid or the fat kid. every year 30,000 japanese take their own lives. im not sure of the age breakdown but many of them must be ypung, and with so many suicides the media hardly ever takes it up, unless its especially bad.
