A Loony Writes

Daniel Kalder reviews Qaddafi's other book, 1993's Escape to Hell, a collection of short stories and essays:

In the title story – a truly unhinged free-form eruption of useless words – Gaddafi declares that it was an “Arab prince”, not Columbus, who discovered America. The rest is incoherent blather. In Death, he tackles the pressing question: is death a man, and thus to be fought, or a woman to whose tender embrace we must surrender? I won’t ruin the ending for you.

Very sad and heart breaking Not to mention the poverty there..these acts happen when religion and poverty come together.

This has been going on for centuries. The upside is that now we hear about it and that authorities do something. It means good sense is somehow creeping in view of public awareness.

CS - Lashed Girl
The body of Hena Akhter, the Bangladeshi girl who died after a public lashing. (Credit: AFP / Getty Images)

Despite her mother proclaiming her innocence, Bangladeshi 14-year-old Hena Akhter was convicted of adultery, and, according to Sharia Law, sentenced to 101 lashes. She dropped after 70, and was taken to a hospital, where she died one week later. Initially, an autopsy report deemed her death a suicide, but a further investigation has uncovered some chilling details. Growing up in a shared hut in rural Shariatpur, Hena was repeatedly harassed by her 42-year-old cousin, Mahbub Khan. One night, according to Hena’s sister, Khan beat and raped her, and when his wife intervened, she dragged the teenage girl back to their hut and trampled her on the floor. The next day, the imam ordered a fatwa, sentencing the couple to an illicit relationship. Khan only ended up receiving a few lashes, unlike Hena. After Hena’s severely beaten body was exhumed and doctors confirmed she died of internal bleeding, authorities launched an investigation, charging the doctors on Monday for Hena’s “false post-mortem report,” and then arresting several people, including Khan, in connection with Hena’s death.

Wisconsin Church Members Charged With Abusing Infants

The pastor and seven members of a small church in central Wisconsin have been charged with using wooden rods to spank infants as young as 2 months old for "being emotional, grumpy or crying," the Dane County Sheriff's office said.

***********************

"If you spank early and it is done right, then kids will be happy and obedient," Philip Caminiti said, according to the criminal complaint.

From the newly added Pew Forum page  (More.. menu) here's an interesting chart of god's comparative appreciation for the different cults that cater to him.

He seems to care more particularly for Mormons, Muslims, and Jehova's Witnesses for some reason.

Photo Gallery: Iran Before the Chador
1:30 pm Friday Mar 25, 2011 by Judy Berman

By now, hopefully, we all know something about the Iranian Revolution (and America’s lamentable role in it), whether we learned about it at school or in the pages of Persepolis. Still, it’s difficult to grasp the extent of the Ayatollah Khomeini regime’s impact on secular society without having a sense of what Iran was like in the years immediately preceding the revolution. That is precisely why the images from R&R Gallery‘s Before the Chador, a show curated by LA-based rapperMalkovich Music and comprised of 30 photos of an Iranian family before the conflict, feel so rare, valuable, and ultimately bittersweet. In one shot set at the beach, a bathing beauty leans against a classic ’60s car; in another, the entire clan clusters around the hookah at an evening gathering. One question lingers: What happened to this family after the revolution?

Humans can bounce back faster than that, Hope.  Einstein is exaggerrating a bit in the referenced quote.  We will at least be able to have bows and arrows = probably crossbows.
