What Mark Steyn Thinks Of Christians

Not quite "poor, uneducated and easily led" but close:

This guy [Anders Breivik] isn’t a serious Christian. He’s a devoted New York Times reader, and he’s an extremely well-read guy.

Serious Christianity is defined entirely by your media choices and your education. That it might actually require faith in God seems not to have occurred to Steyn, whose views on Europe and Islam, are echoed in so many places in Breivik's manifesto. My own take on Breivik's "faith" is here.

THE AGE OF DISSOLUTION

Ganga-2

At the beginning of time, the great gods churned the ocean and found the nectar of immortality, only to have the demon-god Rahu steal it and gulp it down. The sun and moon gods tattled to Vishnu, who beheaded the demon; his body perished, but his head, having absorbed the nectar, had become immortal. Since then, whenever he can manage it, Rahu, the lord of petroleum mining, fertilizers, chemicals, stock markets, and destructive growth—that is to say, the lord of contemporary India—swallows the sun and the moon. But they always sail back out of his gaping throat and rearrange themselves in the sky. At 6:24 a.m. on July 22, 2009, I stood with seventy thousand people hip-deep in the gray, gluey mud of the Ganga, swirling with ashes, flowers, sloughed-off sin, and fecal bacteria.1 Although the sun had stumbled into a stratus sky only an hour ago, the clouds gave way and starlight began to play on the opalescent tides. We battled a compulsion to stare straight into the cosmic misalignment; we mutely implored the sun to pass through Rahu’s mouth, throat, and neck once again.

SCIENTOLOGISTS, CATHOLICS AND MORE MONEY THAN GOD

From The New York Times:

Wills2-sub-popupWe do not need these books to tell us that money and religion make for a poisonous combination. But it is of some interest to see that ancient truth confirmed in both a church as relatively new as Scientology and one as ancient as Roman Catholicism. Even religious leaders develop a certain swagger when they know they are backed by bundles of cash. When a French court fined Scientology nearly a million dollars, one of its officials shrugged that off as “chump change.” And when the Vatican ran a deficit of nearly 2.4 million euros in 2007, an Italian journalist familiar with the church’s finances dismissed the debt as “chopped liver.” Chump change or chopped liver, both churches have bigger sums they can get to and use, and few outsiders are given a look at how they do it. These two books trace the cash source of theological confidence.

Combating Atheism with Sola Scriptura
Christian Post (blog)
How were atheists and other unbelievers converted in the Bible? Hardly are we told this was accomplished by argument or convincing debate. Instead, we learn the Spirit of God came upon teachers and people heard the word of God, saw the wonders of God...

Hoping to catch lightning in a bottle twice, British comedian Ricky Gervais – who brought The Office to the USA – is working on a new sitcom called Afterlife.

The show will follow an atheist who goes to heaven and is being developed in partnership with Dexterproducer Clyde Phillips.

"Dexter has consistently been my favorite show of the last five years. When I first saw Clyde's name all over it I knew I had to work with him one day,"Gervais writes on his blog. "I found out he was also a fan of my work and we then became friends on email and through short conversations on various red carpets. We finally started working on an idea this year and really hit it off. I am so excited about this project."
