We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Yes, religion does have all the answers.

Saudi Arabian cleric has claimed that the Earth does not orbit the sun and is in fact stationary, making the opposite true.

Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari stunned students at a university in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday by telling them the Earth is “stationary and does not move”, Al Arabiya reported.

A video of the Muslim cleric’s lecture showed him using a cup of water in an attempt to debunk the theory that the world rotates as it orbits the sun.

“Focus with me, this is Earth;” he said, holding the cup.

Focus people, focus.

Sadly some people follow him and believe his B/S.

Pat Robertson had a lot of followers too.

He was a joke in my opinion too.

Why do people follow these guys?

JonesTown, The Wakao Branch Dividians, Hitler, Pol Pot, and etcetera?

G/D sheep?

Power, money & control, plain & simple.

Its just too bad the vulnerable can't see that before being roped in.

I suspect many do, but know its unreasonable but continue anyway.

Then when they realize its not great, they're stuck.

Even when they know its unreasonable and illogical.

Q: How does a Muslim cleric’s claim that the Earth is stationary differ from the claim by some of us that the universe began with a “Bang”?

A: Those two claims don’t differ.

Tom of course there is a difference we can observe that the earth isn't standing still. As for the Big Bang it's just an hypothesis that we can't observe but only extrapolate

Sure, Stephen, we have BEEN TOLD, AND TOLD OFTEN, that the earth is moving, and I’m willing to believe it is moving.

So we regurgitate that bit of info and we add what you added, we can observe.

But if the earth isn’t standing still, then with respect to what other body (or bodies) is the earth not standing still? We can feel acceleration and deceleration, but do you FEEL MOVEMENT?

Are you certain that the “other body” isn’t moving with respect to earth?

AN OCCASIONAL BIT OF SKEPTICISM PROVIDES EXERCISE FOR MINDS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED POLITICS, BREXITIAN OR TRUMPIAN.

Postscript. I feel the earth’s gravity. I don’t feel the moon’s or the sun’s gravity.

Yes, you do but gravity is a very weak force.

Stephen, the earth’s gravity is a strong enough force that I can measure it in pounds.

The moon’s and sun’s gravity is weak and I don’t know of any devices I can use to measure it.
