In my neck-of-the woods, Hippies still exist, but many think they are simply dirty, lazy vagrants. They're part of the landscape, and have been hanging around since the 60's. Some are young and arrive in town with backpacks and wear their hair in…Continue

Comment by Jean Marie on May 18, 2011 at 10:27pm oops, typo in post below, i meant to say "and like most hoosiers they were conservative" not "like most women they were conservatives"...
sry.

Comment by Jean Marie on May 18, 2011 at 3:37pm WHAT AN ERA though, eh?
We had civil rights movements, desgregation, anti-war protests, women's rights were coming up, the sexual revolution, (women had birth control for first time, too) People were marching everywhere, partying everywhere, all the "Peace and Love" for Everyone,
and an 'anti-establishment' tendency that we could use more of again today....

Comment by Jean Marie on May 18, 2011 at 3:26pm ha, i just flashed back to when CraigiePie first brought me round to meet all his friends, when i'd first moved to Indiana,
and like all women in USA, they had dyed hair, and i had gray stripe down one side of my head, and like most women they were conservatives, not interested in activism, and not interested in the causes i was interested in,
and i had completely different viewpoints than they did....and this woman was looking at me curiously,
and she suddenly smiled big at me, as if catagorizing me, as if figuring me out, and said
"Jean! You are an old hippie, aren't you?"
ha ha!! she then stammered around to walk back the word old, " i mean former hippie, or you used to be a hippie, didn't you?" but, i was smiling very big.
i felt oddly proud it still showed!! (my daughter has since, in recent years, given me ambush makeover and the white stripe is now dyed...but, i'm thinking of having it back, i miss it..now i am just like eveyrone else.)
(not that the gray stripe was THE giveaway, but, it made me stand out back then, made me different, to be unafraid of the white hair, to be more natural than to have dyed hair...Patients used to exclaim, "you have gray hair!" as if it was novel/unheard of, or as if i did not know and should go dye it.
Ha, when it FIRST started appearing, i can't tell you how many times ppl asked me if i realized i had white hairs that showed, rofl.)
