Comment by Dallas the Phallus on May 10, 2012 at 8:18pm She had some tibouchina there, and the leaf shape was similar, but those leaves were slightly varigated, while these are not. They are, however, soft and plush. But the flowers are not deep purple. The pics of the achimenes don't match either, as those all seem to have scalloped or jagged-edged leaves, while this plant does not.

Comment by Chuck Goecke on May 10, 2012 at 7:13pm Tibouchia is a shrub with fuzzy leaves and very deep purple flowers. The top parts are frost tender, but they are root hardy(well drained) also from Dallas south(zone 8).

Comment by Chuck Goecke on May 10, 2012 at 7:10pm Dallas, that is an Achimenes, an African Violet relative(a Gesneriad)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achimenes. They grow from small scaly pine cone-like bulbs, and are hardy outdoors from Dallas south. They need to be kept dry and well drained to make it through the winter, and I guess they can get somewhat aggressive.
Comment by Dallas the Phallus on May 10, 2012 at 6:00pm This didn't have a name when I bought it, but the young woman said that it was a tibouchina. Well, it sort of resembles that, when I search for tibouchina images online I cannot find one that matches. Most seem to be shrubs or trees, but this is more like a ground cover. I'm using it in a hanging basket. The flowers open in the morning and drop off by 5 PM or so. Kind of resembles a morning glory flower. Can anyone name it?
Comment by Dallas the Phallus on April 14, 2012 at 3:30pm Gorgeous. Where's my one way ticket? Damn I'd rather be there than here.
