It's time in my neck of the woods to begin thinking about what seeds to order for the coming gardening season. In March I generally start a number of crops indoors here in northern Vermont so that they'll be ready to venture outside for hardening…Continue

Comment by Dallas the Phallus on April 11, 2012 at 4:04pm I've had edible flowers, but I've never grown any. I can't believe you can't grow succulents in Arizona. What's wrong with you Keely?
i actually had better luck with the cacti than the succulents. I've killed fewer anyhow. I lost most of them this past winter. Try growing one of the Mamillaria species of cacti. They're supposed to be pretty easy to grow.
I think I had an air plant back in the early 90s, but I must have killed it.
Comment by Dallas the Phallus on April 11, 2012 at 1:29pm Thanks Keely. I just had lunch: a grilled chicken breast with chopped fresh oregano, parsley, basil (all from my pots, of course), garlic, and lemon juice, with yellow sunburst tomatoes and steamed broccoli. Nom nom.
Oh, and my snapdragons are blooming again. I thought once the original flowers faded that that would be that, but I trimmed off the dead ones and now twice as many are coming out.
Comment by Dallas the Phallus on April 11, 2012 at 8:55am This is my first year to try container gardening. Do you not grow anything up there?

Comment by Adriana on April 11, 2012 at 8:39am Thanks, Don, I will try my luck with rosemary!
Comment by Don on April 11, 2012 at 8:36am Adriana, potted rosemary does really well indoors. I've had mine for many years in a 12-inch glazed pot. I keep it out on the deck from May until October, but it would be fine inside under a sunny window. It likes to be misted.
Outdoors, my racombole garlic is up about six inches, the rhubarb is pushing its red knobs up through the mulch, the lilac buds are beginning to swell, and, in the herb bed, the chives are fresh and ready, but that's pretty much all I can report of any significance. The oregano is still dormant, and the vegetable garden is waiting to be tilled. All my tomatoes, basils, dill, leeks, melons and squashes, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are doing well in their trays in the sunroom.
Since I started gardening here in northern Vermont more than 30 years ago, we have gained about a month's worth of growing season, two weeks on either end, and we're probably a zone 4 region now. It's been more than 10 years since we've had a winter with any temps colder than -20.

Comment by Adriana on April 11, 2012 at 7:27am I'm coming over to steal some of your oregano and rosemary! And lavender!! Not to mention tomatoes when the season comes :-)
Comment by Dallas the Phallus on April 11, 2012 at 12:25am I've been growing lemon thyme, Greek oregano, dill, and rosemary for weeks, but I got some pots on Freecycle, so I bought some Italian parsley, chives, French lavender, and some boxwood basil today (below):
Also bought a jubilee tomato plant:
And bought another Opuntia vestita again, since I lost mine last year:
And an Opuntia microdasys (bunny ears cactus). The one I got is yellow, but I prefer the white:
And last week I bought a Mammillaria pilcayensis:
And a green wheel sempervivium:
And some Coral Reef Chinese sedum:
