As the U.S., and apparently Canada, moves into being a major supplier of death fuels, some countries are going in a different direction. America doesn't lead anymore, because our government is full of conservative christian dipshits.The country is headed for 80 percent renewable energy and has complete buy-in from all political parties.December 19, 2012 |…Continue

I think I need some of these. =)By Katie Valentine on Mar 25, 2013 at 3:51 pmLED light bulbs are the longest-lasting and most efficient mass-produced light sources to date. And now, they’re also among the most affordable, with some costing less than $10 per bulb — a drastic drop compared to their recent $50 price tag.They’ll also do…Continue

The GMO controversy: environmentalist Mark Lynas admits he was wrong to oppose the technology

Started by Adriana. Last reply by Neal Feb 14. 19 Replies

Full disclosure: most of my professional life I've worked using the many tools of genetic engineering which are basically the same ones employes to make GMO crops. I was never worried about their safety, since we have been doing genetic manipulation by selective breeding of crops and animals ever since the beginning of agriculture, thousands and thousands of years ago, and there is no a priori hypothesis to suspect GMOs would be more harmful to human health than a selectively bread apple, corn,…Continue

Based on the actual composition of the Martian atmosphere Roberson's SUV have already done their damage.  Sheesh, talk about comparing apples and oranges.   The atmosphere of Mars and distance from the Sun is very different than the Earth.

The atmospheric pressure on the surface of Mars varies from around 30 pascals (0.0044 psi) on Olympus Mons's peak to over 1,155 pascals (0.1675 psi) in the depths of Hellas Planitia, with a mean surface level pressure of 600 pascals (0.087 psi), compared to Earth's sea level average of 101.3 kilopascals (14.69 psi), and a total mass of 25 teratonnes, compared to Earth's 5148 teratonnes. However, the scale height of the atmosphere is about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi), somewhat higher than Earth's 7 kilometres (4.3 mi). The atmosphere on Mars consists of 95% carbon dioxide, 3% nitrogen, 1.6% argon, and contains traces of oxygen, water, and methane, for a mean molar mass of 43.34 g/mol.[1][5] The atmosphere is quite dusty, giving the Martian sky a light brown or orange color when seen from the surface;

I think he hoped in vain because that is what we have done basically!

Were it not for global warming we would not be even considering green energy sources now!

The Cotton Conundrum

Pamela Ravasio wonders if we are designating our land resources appropriately:

[T]he plantations of the three largest cotton growers - the US, China and India - alone account for 50 million acres, 42% of all agricultural land. In contrast, food crops amount to some 40 million acres and fuel crops to 32 million acres. In other words: It is the 'white gold', cotton, not fuel, that is in direct competition with food.

Tom Philpott takes issue with Ravasio's numbers but thinks her overall point has merit:

According to the UN's Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), global cotton production doubled between 1960 and 2001. In that period, some of the most hunger-prone countries on the planet shifted significant farmland to cotton for the global market, hoping to build wealth from a valuable commodity crop. ...
