After hurricane Katrina I looked at practical housing methods and thought that shipping crates would make be better emergency living quarters than mobile homes. The military was using modified shipping crates in Iraq that had 2 bedrooms with 1 shared bath. That could have easily been made into a studio. Here are 8 shipping container homes. I've seen some nicer than most of these.light in the window of a shipping container home

One-Sqm-House: Build the Smallest House in the World!

Workshop

Sunday, July 8, 2012, 10 am–9:30 pm

Architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel’s dream was to create “a house for everybody,” so he developed a DIY wooden house that you can make completely by yourself. The structure can be assembled using everyday materials from the hardware store: with just a cordless screwdriver and a saw, you can build your own house. Le-Mentzel, who is already known for the invention of a DIY furniture collection called Hartz IV-Möbel, now presents the smallest house in the world: the One-Sqm-House.

Why is it special? Although the floor area measures only one square meter (thus the name), through a flipping mechanism it can provide a place to sleep. It is ideal for Occupy activists, as well as for imperiled homeowners who want to ensure the security of their site. Entrepreneurs can use the One-Sqm-House as a mobile kiosk, or it could be used as a confessional box or a space for meditation. Because of its compactness, the One-Sqm-House is not only suitable for the outdoors. It can also be used in an open-space office, as a phone booth, or as an extended guest room in your apartment. It’s a spatial miracle!

How Coffee Became Quick

The invention of espresso:

In the 19th century, coffee was a huge business in Europe with cafes flourishing across the continent. But coffee brewing was a slow process and, as is still the case today, customers often had to wait for their brew. Seeing an opportunity, inventors across Europe began to explore ways of using steam machines to reduce brewing time – this was, after all, the age of steam. ...

In [Luigi] Bezzera’s original patent, a large boiler with built-in burner chambers filled with water was heated until it pushed water and steam through a tamped puck of ground coffee. The mechanism through which the heated water passed also functioned as heat radiators, lowering the temperature of the water from 250°F in the boiler to the ideal brewing temperature of approximately 195°F (90°C). Et voila, espresso. For the first time, a cup of coffee was brewed to order in a matter of seconds.

Jun. 27, 2012

Researchers at University of Tokyo’s Ishikawa Oku Laboratory have developed the perfect robot. That is, if your idea of perfection is a 1.000 winning percentage at rock-paper-scissors. The robot employs a high-speed camera which predicts the human hand’s impending play, and reacts within one millisecond — faster than the human eye can process. Just remember that when Judgment Day is upon us and our robot conquerors know our every move.
