Gender Blender

We aim to discuss all gender issues, not just women issues. Society views of gender affects us from birth. It is the biggest divide between people. We welcome issues relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

World's Health Organization definition of gender:

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behavior, activities and attributes that a particular society considers appropriate for men and women.

The distinct roles and behaviour may give rise to gender inequalities, i.e. differences between men and women that systematically favour one group. In turn, such inequalities can lead to inequities between men and women in both health status and access to health care.

This group may end up having an emphasis on issues of inequality, since these are huge issues, human rights issues; they concern everybody. I also encourage discussions on every aspect of gender: science in general, sociology, psychology, education, rights, etc. are all important topics. I will add pages to the group with websites of interest. Suggestions are most welcome!

I guess this is new news?

Andrew Sullivan / The Daily Dish:

Anderson Cooper: “The Fact Is, I'm Gay.”  —  Last week, Entertainment Weekly ran a story on an emerging trend: gay people in public life who come out in a much more restrained and matter-of-fact way than in the past.  In many ways, it's a great development: we're evolved enough not to be gob-smacked when we find out someone's gay.+

Love And Death In Tennessee

Joan Garrett's, in her in-depth reporting from Red Bank, TN, tells a bracing, moving story about a Southern Baptist minister grappling with his gay son's life and death:

The faithful hold firmly to God with one hand, family with the other. But sometimes we are forced to choose. If we can't hold onto both, which one do we let go? In 1991, after 25 years of defining himself by his position in the church, Matt Nevels' faith abruptly and irrevocably collided with the death of his middle son.

Fred Clark's view:

The story of Matt Nevels recalls in many ways all those other recent articles fretting about the Millennial generation’s disillusionment with the church. Nevels’ story shows the human side to all those statistics and all that polling data — putting a face on all those numbers. Like so many those Millennials, Nevels experienced personal pain at the cruelty and rejection the church showed someone he loved, and that pain forever altered his perception of the church. But the difference here is that Matt Nevels is 78 years old. And he is a retired Southern Baptist minister.

Gay Coach Fired over Two Goofy Photos

When Mitch Stein posted a couple of goofy photographs to his Facebook page, he never dreamed that years later they would lead to his being kicked out of coaching.

Last August the principal of Charter Oak High School in Covina, California, called Stein into this office and fired him. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports the trouble started when three members of the water polo team showed up without proof of their required physical examinations. Stein set them to washing cars instead of practicing. One of the parents retaliated by printing two photographs off the gay coach’s Facebook site and sending them anonymously to the school.

According to Outsports, one of the photographs was at least a decade old. In one shot he was surrounded by drag queens. In the other he was about to stuff his face with a corn dog. They were high-jinx shots of a slice of gay culture, nothing more. (They can no longer be seen online.)

Stein was stunned by what the firing implied. He is loving father to two daughters, a 15-year-old and a newly adopted baby. He was assistant coach for the school’s winning water polo team. Even though he’s been fired, he is still out there raising funds for the school. Nothing in his behavior with students nor in his coaching has been called into question. His only “crime” is two photos posted years ago.

In an interview with Kergan Edwards-Stout in The Bilerico Project, Stein said none of the people involved in the firing had ever met him – not the parent who sent in the photos, not the principal or the assistant superintendent, not the school athletic director.

At first Stein’s fiance, Hugo, just wanted to move on and focus on their family, but Stein decided he had to fight the dismissal. He felt he owed it to Devynn, his teenaged daughter. She is a student at Charter Oaks and is on the water polo team. When he suggested she might want to change schools, she told him, “Dad, I don’t want to change schools. And besides, if we change schools, they win.”

Parents rallied around the coach. Even after he was fired, they voted him, unanimously, to the post of president of the aquatics booster board.

That hypothesis sounds like total nonsense, but I suppose i should read the research in detail before emitting a judgment.

Why Doesn't Gayness Die Out?

A common hypothesis, which the Dish has covered before, is that "a gene predisposing a man to be gay might make a woman even more attracted to men than she otherwise would be, so that she would engage in more heterosexual sex and thus become pregnant more often."  New research adds a wrinkle to the theory:

Rather than making women more attracted to men, the "gay man gene" appears to make these women more attractive to men. ... Turns out, the moms and aunts of gay men have an advantage over the moms and aunts of straight men for several reasons: They are more fertile, displaying fewer gynecological disorders or complications during pregnancy; they are more extroverted, as well as funnier, happier and more relaxed; and they have fewer family problems and social anxieties.
