Gender Blender

We aim to discuss all gender issues, not just women issues. Society views of gender affects us from birth. It is the biggest divide between people. We welcome issues relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

World's Health Organization definition of gender:

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behavior, activities and attributes that a particular society considers appropriate for men and women.

The distinct roles and behaviour may give rise to gender inequalities, i.e. differences between men and women that systematically favour one group. In turn, such inequalities can lead to inequities between men and women in both health status and access to health care.

This group may end up having an emphasis on issues of inequality, since these are huge issues, human rights issues; they concern everybody. I also encourage discussions on every aspect of gender: science in general, sociology, psychology, education, rights, etc. are all important topics. I will add pages to the group with websites of interest. Suggestions are most welcome!

That hypothesis sounds like total nonsense, but I suppose i should read the research in detail before emitting a judgment.

Why Doesn't Gayness Die Out?

A common hypothesis, which the Dish has covered before, is that "a gene predisposing a man to be gay might make a woman even more attracted to men than she otherwise would be, so that she would engage in more heterosexual sex and thus become pregnant more often."  New research adds a wrinkle to the theory:

Rather than making women more attracted to men, the "gay man gene" appears to make these women more attractive to men. ... Turns out, the moms and aunts of gay men have an advantage over the moms and aunts of straight men for several reasons: They are more fertile, displaying fewer gynecological disorders or complications during pregnancy; they are more extroverted, as well as funnier, happier and more relaxed; and they have fewer family problems and social anxieties.

The Best And Worst Reactions To Carrie Underwood's Gay Marriage End...

After Carrie Underwood endorsed gay marriage in an interview with The Independent this weekend, critics were wondering how her conservative fan base would react. Judging from her Facebook fan posts, reaction is mixed. There's definite backlash there, but there's also a ton of support. I doubt this is going to turn into a Dixie Chicks thing. History is on Carrie's side.

'SEXUAL DEPRAVITY' OF PENGUINS THAT ANTARCTIC SCIENTIST DARED NOT REVEAL

Robin McKie in The Guardian:

Dr-George-Murray-Levicks--008It was the sight of a young male Adélie penguin attempting to have sex with a dead female that particularly unnerved George Murray Levick, a scientist with the 1910-13 Scott Antarctic Expedition. No such observation had ever been recorded before, as far as he knew, and Levick, a typical Edwardian Englishman, was horrified. Blizzards and freezing cold were one thing. Penguin perversion was another.

Worse was to come, however. Levick spent the Antarctic summer of 1911-12 observing the colony of Adélies at Cape Adare, making him the only scientist to this day to have studied an entire breeding cycle there. During that time, he witnessed males having sex with other males and also with dead females, including several that had died the previous year. He also saw them sexually coerce females and chicks and occasionally kill them.

Levick blamed this "astonishing depravity" on "hooligan males" and wrote down his observations in Greek so that only an educated gentleman would understand the horrors he had witnessed. Back in Britain he produced a paper (in English), titled Natural History of the Adélie Penguin. However, the section about the animal's sexual proclivities was deemed to be so shocking it was removed to preserve decency. Levick then used this material as the basis for a separate short paper, Sexual Habits of the Adélie Penguin, which was privately circulated among a handful of experts.

In fact, Levick's observations turned out to be well ahead of their time.

More here.

Miss Pennsylvania USA Resigns In Protest Of Transgender Candidates

Before Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss USA last week, she answered a question about transgender contestants in the pageant, openly embracing their inclusion. But Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin was really put off by the realization, resigning in protest that the competition had opened to transgender women. In an email to the Miss Universe Organization she explained just how she really felt about trans people:

[I refuse to be] part of a pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to compete in it. This goes against ever moral fiber of my being. I believe in integrity, high moral character, and fair play, none of which are part of this system any longer.

Were these comments not offensive enough, she then posted false statements about her resignation on Facebook, claiming that the real reason she quit was because she believed the pageant was rigged. Donald Trump responded that he believes “her primary issue is that she lost and she’s angry about losing. And frankly, in my opinion, I saw her barely a second and she didn’t deserve to be in the top 15.”

The Miss Universe contest opened to trans candidates earlier this year after Jenna Talackova sought to compete for Miss Canada. She ultimately finished in the Top 12 and was named Miss Congeniality.

I remember a few yeas ago i saw a trailer for a documentary called "Being T" that was also funded by Janet Jackson. I was looking forward to it because it seemed to give good time to the nuanced reality of trans dating lives, esp. trans women of color. And it didn't seem to oversimplify things like a lot of trans documentaries have done.

As far as i know, Being T never got released. I wonder if this is what became of that film, or if this is another project in the works. At any rate, i hope Truth turns out to be as good as Being T had the potential to be.
