I grew up in the 70's-80s, my thick glasses were never the issue.  It was the fact that I am short and, according to the4 other kids, had a flat nose.

My older son also wore eyeglasses from kindergarten through middle school and was pushed around (once, his glasses were broken) and made fun of. It was difficult to handle. Fortunately when puberty kicked in he got very tall and strong and nobody else pushed him around.

My older son had really bad eyesight and was wearing thick glasses. He was a "reject" in school from grade 2 to 7 just because of that. It was heartbreaking for us and I can barely imagine what it has been for him.

Children are much better than we give them credit for at working who's similar and who's different, us and them. Children are pack animals.

Sorry that you can relate to that kid's experiences, DG. And sorry you were forced to eat with the other kids when you were not comfortable, Marianne. Our society is very cruel to kids that do not perfectly fit the "norm". When we were kids, it was even worse; there were no support groups for anything.

It's an old SNL skit in which Steve Martin plays a doctor in the middle ages, giving people leeches and blood letting, but his patients keep dying. He then thinks he should follow the scientific method or research and evidence, then finishes off with "Naahhhhhhh!" and goes back to doing what he was doing before. You know, kind of like theists and homeopaths.

@Marianne  You do know the Onion is satire?  But you are right about their being different reasons for eating lunch alone.

Heh, I remember that skit. =)

Yes, all kinds of kids for all kinds of reasons, actually.
