The preposterous, the ridiculous, the manipulative.

Rupert Murdock is not a friend of humanity. This brainchild of his, ridiculous as it stands, is poisonning the whole North American consensus. In cases like that the doctor recommends satire and ridicule.

Post your favorite clips and newsbits here. Of course satirical material is more than welcome. The Onion, Daily Show, Colbert Report...

Please note: Comedy Central videos are not visible outside the USA.

@doone - Fascinating parallel!

It does highlight the difference of bias.

Are Right-Wing Blogs More Dangerous Than The Left?

In a word, in our current world: yes. Henry Farrell uses WaPo Ombudsman Patrick Pexton's weak defense of Jennifer Rubin's blaming al-Qaeda for the Norway attacks to make a larger point about the role of blogs in fomenting violence:

There is no effective contact between e.g. MoveOn or the Daily Kos on the one hand, and the various subgroups and splinters who are more enthusiastic about violence on the other. When the latter try to influence the former, they get mobbed and repelled. The right is a quite different matter – there are dense social ties between online partisans and anti-Muslim bigots and crazies claiming that universal dhimmidom is right around the corner.

Pexton’s suggestion that leftwing bloggers need to think carefully about whether they too will inspire the mass-murder of scores of teenagers doesn’t deserve a serious response in itself. But it is worth looking at as a specific manifestation of a more pervasive intellectual confusion between two different forms of ‘extremism,’ one of which is not in fact a form of extremism at all.

Eric Alterman piles on Pexton. When was the last time there was a left-wing secular mass murder or assassination in America? Or Europe? There was a time when left and right violence could be equated or compared. I just don't see the evidence for it today. Especially if you consider Islamist terror, as I do, also a form of radical right fundamentalism. Bin Laden's agenda was far closer to Pat Robertson's than Michael Moore's, as that fatuous Christianist reminded us just after 9/11.

They want your children from the womb so they can indoctrinate your children as to what they want them to be.

Which is exactly what THEY want to do to them with THEIR indoctrination... right?

Well, then lets shut down the churches to anyone under eighteen. Dumb fucks.

"Of course, the government wants their hands on your children as fast as they can. That is why I opposed all these early starts and pre-early starts, and early-early starts. They want your children from the womb so they can indoctrinate your children as to what they want them to be. I am against that," - Rick Santorum.

Huh? Newt Declares Obama ‘A Paul Krugman Presidency’

Newt Gingrich took to FOX News Monday night to compare President Obama to, of all people, Paul Krugman, one of the White House's fiercest critics.

"This is a Paul Krugman presidency," Gingrichtold Bill O'Reilly. "[Obama] believes that stuff. He actually believes in left-wing economic ideas. The only problem with them is that they don't work."

It was an odd comparison, given that the New York Times columnist has staked out a position as Obama's ultimate nemesis on the left since the very earliest days of his administration.

"If only!" Krugman replied by e-mail, when asked about Newt's claim by TPM.

Krugman made the cover of Newsweek in Obama's very first year in office as part of a profile entitled "OBAMA IS WRONG: The Loyal Opposition of Paul Krugman." Politico's Mike Allen labeled him the "anti-Obama."

At the time of the Newsweek story, Krugman was arguing in his column that Obama's stimulus plan was too small to prevent massive, prolonged unemployment and that the White House had failed to get tough enough on big finance. Needless to say, the stalling recovery today and Obama's recent interest in negotiating multi-trillion dollar spending cuts hasn't led Krugman to change his tone. One recent post recast the president as "Barack Herbert Hoover Obama."

"This is truly a tragedy: the great progressive hope (well, I did warn people) is falling all over himself to endorse right-wing economic fallacies," he wrote.

This story has been updated.

Bill Nye Explains To Fox News Moon Volcanoes Don’t Cause Global Warming

Bill Nye the Science Guy! We remember him. “Bill Nye the Science Guy” was a 90s television program on PBS Kids that taught science in fun and accessible ways to children. Explaining science to children, you might say, is Bill Nye’s great gift. Here is Bill Nye talking to Fox News anchor Jon Scott about the exciting recent discovery of volcanoes on the Moon and its implications for life’s origins. Scott isn’t terribly interested in this, but he does want to know if these volcano things caused the climate change on the moon. It’s not like humans even burned any fossil fuels on the moon, and look how the moon turned out!

Bill Nye sort of stares at him for a second, because for a scientist this irrational tangent is probably a little hard to follow. Sorry, Bill, we should have reminded you to review a dictionary of idiot speak before you went on the show. The word “science” sounds like “global warming conspiracy” in a Fox News brain. Nye patiently explains to Jon Scott that volcanoes have nothing to do with global warming, mining does, and science shows that global warming will make Earth into a hellfire lava pool that kills off every living thing, more like Venus. That’s what “science” says. Blank stare. What do hippie leftist environazis have to do with Venus? Okay, well thanks. That’s the last time Fox News tries to invite an actual children’s science teacher on the program. [Media Matters]

Yeah, I knew this was going to create a nauseating overuse of the No True Scotsman logical fallacy. Can you imagine if this mass murderer had been a Muslim, even if he was just a Muslim culturally? Nobody (excepr perhaps some moderate Muslims) would be making the argument that the guy was not a true Muslim. this would have become an indictment of Islam and all Muslims as religious terrorists.
