THE CHEESE PARTY: IS WISCONSIN THE START OF AN AMERICAN REVOLUTION (OR WILL YOU ALWAYS BE RULED BY GOLDMAN SACHS)?

by Evert Cilliers aka Adam Ash

ScreenHunter_04 Mar. 14 10.18Whenever I pay taxes, I think of the fact that  GE and Exxon paid no taxes in 2009, that Goldman Sachs pays under 2% taxes, and that billionaire hedge fund managers pay a tax rate of 15%. As Warren Buffett says, his secretary pays taxes at a higher rate than he does.

The philosopher Emmanuel Levinas talks about the face-to-face encounter with the Other that induces empathy and morality. Well, I feel like my little face is going face-to-face with the gnarly butt of big business. And there's about as much empathy to be gotten from that butt as a mouse gets from a snake.

Bizarrely, I hear everyone walking around saying America and its states are broke, while Wall Street is coining billions and criminally under-paying their taxes. I hear the GOP saying we don't have a revenue problem; we have a spending problem. I see Obama extending the Bush tax cuts, which created no new jobs in eight years. And I'm thinking, I have so little hair left, what's the use of tearing out the last few?

Then it occurs to me that Americans must be one of four things, or a combination of all four:

b) stupid victims of learned helplessness.

c) stupidly apathetic to the point of cowardice.

d) stupid masochists.

d) plain stupid.

That includes you and me, dear reader.

Main Street Movement

by digby

Think Progress calls this the Main street movement, and I think that's pretty good:

Police estimated up to 100,000 people turned out in Madison, WI yesterday to protest Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) assault on unions, making it bigger than any protests the city has witnessed, even those during the Vietnam War...yesterday’s rally in Madison is noteworthy because at 85,000-100,000, it was bigger than the biggest tea party protest, the September 12, 2009 rally in Washington, D.C., which turned out only an estimated 60,000-70,000.

Chart of the Day

Is employee compensation driving state budget woes? No:

In the short-term, the problem for state budgets is that the recession caused a drop in tax revenues. In the longer-term, the main issue is Medicaid costs.

Oil Imports

Insightful chart from Mark Doms at the Commerce Department:

A trade deficit widening because Americans are getting more or better goods from abroad has very different implications from a trade deficit widening because Americans are getting the exact same quantity and quality of foreign goods but just paying more for them.

From Episode Two of the film series "The Century of the Self" by Adam Curtis. The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Edward Bernays started his business life as a publicist. While still in his twenties, he was part of the propaganda effort that drove the United States into in World War I (WW I.)

He personally advised several US presidents starting with Woodrow Wilson and counseled numerous corporations and business associations. Hitler's propaganda chief and Nazi henchman Joseph Goebbels was a reader and fan of Bernay's writing in particular Bernay's book "Crystalizing Public Opinion."

In this short excerpt from Curtis's film we see one example of Bernays at work.

Bernays was one of the engineers of the Cold War. He perfected the technique of manufacturing a distant but ever-threatening enemy and then creating a constant state of fear by generating false news reports that endlessly re-stated and exagerated the threat.

The stated purpose of Bernay's methods was to give those in power greater control over what he called "the mass mind." It worked well in the 1950s and sadly, it appears to be working quite well today... but maybe not forever.

Quote For The Day

In the end, it's hard to sustain the shock and outrage of the newly fiscally conscious GOP. Not the Tea Party types, especially, but, well Steve Benen gets it just right:

I'd be remiss if I neglected to mention how amusing it is to hear Mitch McConnell express concern about the debt. The Kentucky Republican voted for the Bush tax cuts, and added the costs to the national debt. McConnell then voted to finance the war in Afghanistan by adding the costs to the national debt. He then voted to put the costs of the war in Iraq onto the national debt. McConnell supported a massive expansion of the government's role in health care, Medicare Part D, and voted to pile all of its costs right onto the national debt, and then backed the financial industry bailout, and added the bill to the national debt. All the while, McConnell had no qualms about voting to raise the debt limit.

But now McConnell is willing to risk default unless Democrats agree to a plan to help clean up the mess McConnell helped create. Fascinating.

Fascinating perhaps. Disgusting is how I'd put it.

Chart Of The Day

Unemployment

Rachel Ziemba captions:

As we've seen recently, these three factors—low median age, low GDP, and high unemployment—combined can be a catalyst for popular uprisings and regime change. This chart shows median age on the vertical axis, unemployment rate on the horizontal axis, and the size of GDP by the size of the circle. Oil exporters appear as red circles, and oil importers as blue ones.

Wow! A really MASSIVE earthquake. Building did not fall in Tokyo because of building codes that were respected. This is the role of having a government. I take my hat off to the Japanese people. And I hope the tsunami will turn out out not to do damage to Hawaii or to the American West Coast.
