Could A Theist President Perry Repeal Health Care Reform? Ctd

by Patrick Appel

If the GOP takes the Presidency, the House, and Senate they could undo much of the Obama's health care reform law, but without sixty GOP votes in the Senate, Austin Fraktsays the "the insurance regulations," which "require insurers to take all comers, independent of pre-existing conditions," aren't going anywhere:

Klein is right that the GOP could pull off the partial repeal he describes. However, practically speaking, one other thing (or set of things) must be in place for them to actually do it. It requires that powerful, interested groups back it. Oh sure, technically, Perry, McConnell, and Boehner don’t require the approval of hospitals and insurers, among others. But, realistically, if those three leaders are controlling the government and if they want their party to remain in power, they can’t cross these interest groups.

Damn, she missed her big chance. Will have to follow this to YT. His argument fails big. His thought the the american psychology association are just people who agree and that doesn't mean they are right.

Just like people who belong to a church? Easy.

Obama Can Lose

by Patrick Appel

Nate Silver counters Lichtman:

[O]nly 2 of Mr. Lichtman’s 13 keys pertain to the economy, or 15 percent. ... But chances are the economy is going to be much more important than that: my research suggests that it accounts for about half of a voter’s decision. If the economic factors are bad for Mr. Obama, and noneconomic factors are basically good for him, that’s why the election figures to be on the razor’s edge.

Earlier pushback here.

Could President Perry Repeal Health Care Reform?

by Patrick Appel

Not by himself. But if the GOP makes a clean sweep, the calculus changes:

In a world where President Rick Perry is joined by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker John Boehner — a world that Nate Silver, for one, thinks is possible — this conversation is moot: The law’s regulations and mandates could be waived and its Medicaid expansion and insurance subsidies could be repealed through the budget reconciliation process.

Because Soshalism, That’s Why!

Further evidence of the Kenyan Mooslim’s utter failure to grasp the essentials of free market economics.

Bonus flashback [Huffpo link]:

On the auto bailout, despite GM going public last week and sending billions of dollars back to taxpayers, Perry still insisted that it wasn’t successful and said the federal government shouldn’t be involved in private sector growth.

Double bonus flashback:

In 2009, Mr. Romney said Mr. Obama’s plans for rescuing the automobile industry were “tragic” and “a very sad circumstance for this country.”

Of course, this being Romney, he now says that this tragic idea was really his in the first place, which contortion is one of many reasons that Rick Perry is the most likely GOP nominee.

Yes! Did The Stimulus Work?

by Patrick Appel

Frum says no:

Obama deferred to Democrats in Congress on the writing of his fiscal stimulus. He fought for a big total, but he paid much less attention to what was included in the total. The predictable result: a stimulus that most economists condemn as very poorly designed.

New CBO numbers the complicate that argument. Jonathan Cohn summarizes:

As of June, the agency says, between 1.0 and 2.9 million more people are working because of the Recovery Act. And that figure actually seems to understates the impact. Not only did more people find jobs; more people who had jobs worked additional hours. Throwing those additional hours into the mix, CBO determined that the Recovery Act's net impact was the equivalent of between 1.4 and 4.0 million additional full-time jobs.

Last week, Dylan Matthews looked at further research on whether the stimulus worked or not.
