Church Leader Still Its ‘Apostle’ After Rape Charges

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexico-based La Luz del Mundo (Light of the World) church said Wednesday that its leader and “apostle” Naasón Joaquín García, who was arrested in California on charges of human trafficking and child rape, remains the spiritual leader of the group, which claims 5 million followers in 58 countries.
The church denied the charges.

Catholic Church spent $10.6 million to lobby against legislation that would benefit victims of child sex abuse

A new report released Tuesday reveals that, over the past eight years, the Catholic Church has spent $10.6 million in the northeastern United States to fight legislation that would help victims of clergy sexual abuse seek justice. "At the most basic level, we were inspired by frustration," says attorney Gerald Williams, a partner at Williams Cedar, one of four law firms that jointly commissioned the report. "We represent hundreds of people, who have truly been victimized by clergymen in the Catholic Church. We've heard a lot about the church's desire to be accountable and turn over a new leaf. But when we turn to the form where we can most help people and where we can get the most justice — the courts of justice — the church has been there blocking their efforts."

https://www.people-press.org/2018/07/11/obama-tops-publics-list-of-...

Currently, 44% name Obama as their first or second choice for having done the best job of any president of their lifetimes, while 33% name Clinton, 32% Reagan and 19% Trump. In 2011, 49% said Clinton had been one of the top two presidents, compared with 34% who cited Reagan and 20% who mentioned Obama.

The share naming Obama has more than doubled since 2011 (from 20% to 44%), while the share mentioning Clinton has declined, from 49% to 33%.

The ratings for other presidents have not changed much since 2011: 32% cite Reagan (34% in 2011); 14% name George W. Bush (15% then); and 12% name Kennedy (15% then).

An approximate total of 75,200 British and Canadian troops and 57,500 US troops were landed by sea and another 23,400 were landed by air.

By the end of June 11 (D-Day plus 5) 326,540 troops, 54,200 armoured vehicles and 104,430 tons of supplies had been landed on the beaches.

Theresa May, Donald Trump and 14 other world leaders will join the Queen and Prince Wales to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Portsmouth.

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces invaded Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe from Nazi and fascist occupation. D-Day is widely regarded as the biggest amphibious military invasion in history.

Commemorations start on Wednesday morning at Southsea Common in Portsmouth.

The event’s primary goal is to honour the Allied soldiers who risked and lost their lives during the operation. But the commemoration will also mark the end of Mr Trump’s state visit to the UK.
