Adopting Islamophobia definition ‘would cripple counter-terrorism'

The adoption of a proposed definition of 'Islamophobia' would have a "seriously detrimental impact" on efforts to keep the UK safe, a former counter-terrorism chief has warned.
Richard Walton said adopting the definition could lead to government departments, the police, intelligence agencies and other public bodies being branded "institutionally Islamophobic"

Walton, the former head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism branch, made the claims in a report published by the Policy Exchange think tank on Monday entitled Islamophobia – Crippling Counter-Terrorism. He co-wrote the report with Policy Exchange's senior research fellow Tom Wilson.

Alabama Lawmakers Move To Outlaw Abortion In Challenge To Roe V. Wade

In what would likely become the most restrictive abortion ban in the country, the Alabama House Tuesday passed a bill that would make it a crime for doctors to perform abortions at any stage of a pregnancy, unless a woman's life is threatened. The legislation is part of a broader anti-abortion strategy to prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the right to abortion.
Republican state Rep. Terri Collins of Decatur, Ala. defended her "Human Life Protection Act" during, at times, contentious debate on the House floor.
"This bill is focused on that baby that's in the womb that is a person," Collins said. "That baby, I believe, would choose life."
Democratic lawmakers walked out in protest before the final 74 to 3 vote. During debate, they questioned the motive for an abortion ban in a state that's refused to expand Medicaid. "I do support life, but there are some people that just support birth they don't support life," said Democratic Rep. Merika Coleman of Birmingham, Ala. "Because after a child is born there are some things that need to happen. We need to make sure that child has adequate health care," Coleman said.

Sri Lanka attacks: Face coverings banned after Easter bloodshed
Sri Lanka has banned face coverings in public, following a spate of suicide attacks on Easter Sunday that killed at least 250 people and injured hundreds.

President Maithripala Sirisena said he was using an emergency law to impose the restriction from Monday.
Any face garment which "hinders identification" will be banned to ensure security, his office said. Muslim leaders criticised the move.
The niqab and burka - worn by Muslim women - were not specifically named.
The move is perceived as targeting those garments, however.
Sri Lanka remains on high alert eight days after Islamist attacks that hit churches and hotels

Australian guilty of plane bomb plot involving meat grinder
A man has been convicted in Australia of plotting to blow up a flight on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) group using a bomb hidden inside a meat grinder.
Khaled Khayat, 51, conspired to bring down the Etihad flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi in July 2017, a jury has ruled. He had pleaded not guilty.
The plot was aborted when a bag holding the bomb was too heavy to be checked in at Sydney Airport, local media said.
He can be sentenced to life in prison.
The plan was to blow up the flight carrying 400 passengers with military grade explosives concealed in the grinder.
Police had accused Khayat, and his brother, Mahmoud, of also planning a chemical gas attack in Sydney.
"The jury this afternoon returned a guilty verdict for Khaled and is still deliberating in respect of Mahmoud," a spokeswoman for the New South Wales Supreme Court was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
Khayat's lawyer, Richard Pontella, argued that his client had in fact been trying to prevent a terrorist attack.
But a jury rejected his argument after three days of deliberations.
Police said the explosives used to make the bomb had been sent by air from Turkey as part of a plot "inspired and directed" by IS.
Khayat will be sentenced on 26 July.

Chart of the Day: Donald Trump Has Already Lost the 2020 Election

Well, in theory, anyway:

Apparently all the Democrats have to do is give that 55 percent no reason to change their minds. For what it’s worth, a similar poll in mid-2016 found that 48 percent of Americans “definitely” wouldn’t vote for Trump. And that turned out to be true. In the end, an additional 4 percent joined the crowd and 52 percent of the electorate didn’t vote for him. If the same dynamic holds next year, Trump will receive about 41 percent of the two-party vote and be turned out of office in one of the biggest landslides ever. Wouldn’t that be great?

State of the Nation report: Social mobility in UK 'virtually stagnant'

Inequality will remain entrenched in the UK "from birth to work" unless the government takes urgent action, the Social Mobility Commission has warned.
Its State of the Nation report said the situation had remained "virtually stagnant" since 2014.
It is calling on ministers to provide additional funding for older teenagers in education and to extend free childcare to more low income families.
The government said it would take the recommendations seriously.
The findings will come as a setback to Theresa May who promised to tackle the "burning injustice" of social inequality when she entered Downing Street in 2016.
However, the following year all of the commissioners on the Social Mobility Commission - set up in 2010 to monitor and promote social mobility - resigned, saying the government was too focused on Brexit to deal with creating a fairer Britain.
Dame Martina Milburn, who has since been appointed as the new chairwoman, said she sensed there was now "a real commitment" from the government.
However, she said the biggest concern was not stagnation but that the problem might actually get worse.

Exclusive: Blackwater founder’s latest sales pitch - mercenaries for Venezuela
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Erik Prince - the founder of the controversial private security firm Blackwater and a prominent supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump - has been pushing a plan to deploy a private army to help topple Venezuela’s socialist president, Nicholas Maduro, four sources with knowledge of the effort told Reuters.
Over the last several months, the sources said, Prince has sought investment and political support for such an operation from influential Trump supporters and wealthy Venezuelan exiles. In private meetings in the United States and Europe, Prince sketched out a plan to field up to 5,000 soldiers-for-hire on behalf of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, according to two sources with direct knowledge of Prince’s pitch.
