Exclusive: No.10 Tried To 'Neuter' Sajid Javid And He Was Right To Quit, His Ex-Adviser Says
Salma Shah tells HuffPost UK's Commons People podcast that Downing Street would have made it "impossible" for Javid to do his job.

Downing Street tried to “neuter” Sajid Javid and he was right to quit as chancellor in protest, his former adviser has said.

Salma Shah told HuffPost UK’s Commons People podcast that No.10’s demands to exert more control over the Treasury would have made it “impossible” for Javid to do his job.
Javid blew up Boris Johnson’s first reshuffle since the Tories’ election victory when he refused demands thought to have come from the PM’s chief of staff Dominic Cummings to establish a joint No.10 and No.11 team of special advisers – effectively giving Johnson and Cummings control of what had been Javid’s own team.
Shah told Commons People: “If you are in a situation where you are asked to get rid of your entire political team, that suggests to me that somebody is trying to neuter you.
“And it’s that great criticism of him [Javid] – chancellor in name only – how can you dispel that and have any kind of authority in your department that runs the economy if a simple matter of staffing you have no control over?”
Shah suggested Johnson may regret following Cummings’ advice as he had a “great relationship” with Javid.
“I’m not sure this is the outcome the prime minister really wanted,” the ex-special adviser said.
She suggested Downing Street had pushed too hard in a months-long feud with Javid and eventually suffered the “pointless” loss of a chancellor.
And she bemoaned the fact that the only ministers with a Muslim background were no longer in government after transport minister Nus Ghani was sacked.
“I do think it matters,” Shah said, “only insofar as, if we are trying to create this broad consensus for when the next election comes round, it is very sad that people representing a community aren’t there in positions of making decisions.
“Although broadly the ethnic minority count is now good, I think there is an important constituency that is now missing from the top table.”
She added: “When you are in a position where you have an 80-strong majority and you are doing your first reshuffle and you feel all-powerful, I think there are many things you can overlook.”
Shah worked closely with Javid for years as he occupied a variety of cabinet roles, including home secretary and housing secretary.
“I imagine, as it would be for any of us, [he will be feeling] quite bittersweet,” she said.
“But I think he is a very decisive person and he makes good decisions because they are based on fact and proper assessment.
“I think he won’t regret it because he did it for a reason, and if the reasons are to be believed, the reason is a good one.”

Has Scump finally gone too far for even his toadies?

Attorney General William Barr told ABC News in an interview aired Thursday that President Trump had never asked him to do anything in a criminal case but advised the president to stop tweeting about the Justice Department, saying it makes it “impossible for me to do my job.”

The remarks are a significant and rare public break by the attorney general from the president, following days of controversy surrounding the Justice Department’s decision to lessen a sentence for Trump ally Roger Stone after the president tweeted about his displeasure with the gravity of the original sentence recommendation.

“I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases,” Barr told ABC in the interview.

‘The intelligence coup of the century’

For decades, the CIA read the encrypted communications of allies and adversaries.

(Who needs enemies when you have friends like America)

For more than half a century, governments all over the world trusted a single company to keep the communications of their spies, soldiers and diplomats secret.
The company, Crypto AG, got its first break with a contract to build code-making machines for U.S. troops during World War II. Flush with cash, it became a dominant maker of encryption devices for decades, navigating waves of technology from mechanical gears to electronic circuits and, finally, silicon chips and software.
The Swiss firm made millions of dollars selling equipment to more than 120 countries well into the 21st century. Its clients included Iran, military juntas in Latin America, nuclear rivals India and Pakistan, and even the Vatican.
But what none of its customers ever knew was that Crypto AG was secretly owned by the CIA in a highly classified partnership with West German intelligence. These spy agencies rigged the company’s devices so they could easily break the codes that countries used to send encrypted messages.

Trump’s words, bullied kids, scarred schools

Two kindergartners in Utah told a Latino boy that President Trump would send him back to Mexico, and teenagers in Maine sneered "Ban Muslims" at a classmate wearing a hijab. In Tennessee, a group of middle-schoolers linked arms, imitating the president's proposed border wall as they refused to let nonwhite students pass. In Ohio, another group of middle-schoolers surrounded a mixed-race sixth-grader and, as she confided to her mother, told the girl: "This is Trump country."

Since Trump’s rise to the nation’s highest office, his inflammatory language — often condemned as racist and xenophobic — has seeped into schools across America. Many bullies now target other children differently than they used to, with kids as young as 6 mimicking the president’s insults and the cruel way he delivers them.

From TPM

There’s far too much water under the bridge for me to consider John Kelly a good guy. But even deeply compromised individuals have their limits. The point he makes here about the Alex Vindman situation is right on point and cuts to the core of our national crisis. As Kelly reminds us officers are trained from the beginning and throughout their career not to follow illegal orders and to report them when they occur through their chain of command. “We teach them, ‘Don’t follow an illegal order. And if you’re ever given one, you’ll raise it to whoever gives it to you that this is an illegal order, and then tell your boss.’”

Certainly this indoctrination is followed too often in the breach. But that is the model that our professional military is based on. They may not have been orders per se but it is the same ethos that led most or all Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher’s fellow soldiers to report him for war crimes.

This is precisely what Vindman did. He did not go to the press, which might have been morally justified but not prescribed by military training. Vindman saw something he believed was illegal and reported it to White House lawyers. That is precisely what they’re trained to do.

Later, he received a congressional subpoena to provided testimony and he complied with that subpoena, which is literally what you are supposed to do and indeed must do. We are far into the legal-moral wilderness in which we now seem to see subpoenas as suggestions or requests.

The idea that he would face reprisals over his actions is simply grotesque. But grotesquery is the unifying theme of President Trump’s presidency.

Tory donor denies funding Boris Johnson's Caribbean holiday

© Thomson Reuters Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds gesture as they arrive at 10 Downing Street on the morning after the general election in London, Britain, December 13, 2019.

Boris Johnson is facing demands to explain who paid £15,000 for a Caribbean holiday over the New Year following disclosures in official documents.
According to the register of members’ interests, a benefactor called David Ross had allowed the prime minister and his partner, Carrie Symonds, to use accommodation for a private holiday in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
It was widely reported that this David Ross was the Tory donor who co-founded the Carphone Warehouse chain and who has a holiday home on the private island of Mustique, one of the Grenadines.

Russian state media have welcomed enthusiastically the recent U.S. Senate acquittal of President Donald J. Trump. Having predicted this outcome for his impeachment trial, Russian experts and state-media pundits are anticipating beneficial side effects for the Kremlin as Trump is more Trump—and more Russia’s Trump—than ever.
