Humanists UK at UN calls on Iran to abolish death penalty for blasphemy and apostasy
Humanists UK has intervened at the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council, calling for the immediate release by Iran of those imprisoned for exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief, and for Iran to abolish the death penalty for the crimes of blasphemy and apostasy. The latest intervention came during an ‘interactive dialogue’ with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran.
Humanists UK’s representative Rachel Taggart-Ryan told the UN, ‘as we mark 30 years since Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Humanists UK’s patron and writer Salman Rushdie, we welcome the Special Rapporteur on Iran’s recommendation that Iran “protect the rights of all persons belonging to religious and ethnic minorities, and address all forms of discrimination against them, and release all those imprisoned for having exercised their right to freedom of religion or belief.”
‘In 2017, the UN Human Rights Council put forward a resolution that demanded an end to the death penalty for apostasy and blasphemy. The resolution reaffirmed that Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights includes the right to freely change one’s religious beliefs and the right to leave a religion entirely. However, the Iranian Government has made no notable progress towards compliance with it. It remains one of 13 countries where judges can impose the death penalty for apostasy or blasphemy in accordance with their own interpretation of Sharia law.’
Ms Taggart-Ryan called for Iran to abolish the use of the death penalty and to remove blasphemy and apostasy from their penal code.
Humanists UK is a member of the End Blasphemy Laws coalition.

As for the British Empire, WWI wasn't its end but you could count down its demise from then. The Socialist government of 1945 started the process of handing independence to many African colonies

Stephen, I wonder if the Polish Catholic Church will decline now, and if so, what will fill the void. I think there, there is a more recent history tying the antiCommunist revolution to the Catholic Church? Maybe Poles will stay more loyal, and not exit like many Irish did, I hope Australia has seen the light too. Now I would love to see the same thing happen in the Phillipines, but that country is so autocratic and poverty stricken, I doubt it will happen there.

Chris, the major European imperial powers before WWI were England, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Austria-Hungary, Holland, Germany.  They had vast, globe- spanning empires.  You can throw the Ottoman Empire into that list, vast, spanning centuries, with global influences and a complex culture.  The USA was beginning to become a global empire  having won the Spanish American War and acquiring some of its colonies.

Not European, but China had a powerful and lasting Empire too, in decline before WWI.  The Ching (Qing) dynasty was moribund by then, lasting from 1644 to 1912.

Germany' s empire was not as old as the others, nor as vast.  It had begun to come together into a major country - Kaiser Wilhelm II was emperor fromm 1888 to 1918.  Before mid 1800s, there were multiple small German "countries" under separate, smaller, rulers.  It did exist before WWI, and in fact was the major foe of most of Europe, but was not  long-established empire with a long dynasty.  His grandfather, Wilhelm I was the first emperor of the united Germany, starting in 1871.
