My mistake about Micheal Temer.

Jair Bolsonari Is who I meant.  Don't know much about Brazilian politics.

In Brazil and the US, democracy is at a crossroads

Jair Bolsonaro.

As the pro-torture Jair Bolsonaro edges closer to presidential victory, democracy in the Americas has rarely seemed so fragile.

Voters in Brazil and the US face elections in the coming weeks whose outcomes will directly influence the future of democracy in the Americas.

In Brazil, the candidate who captured 46% of the votes in Saturday’s first-round presidential elections, Jair Bolsonaro, is pro-torture and speaks in favor of military rule as a way to solve deep societal problems. Bolsonaro will face leftist Fernando Haddad, who gained 29.3% of the first-round votes, in final elections on 28 October.

In the US, the process of filling Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the supreme court underscored the indifference, if not contempt, with which President Trump and Republicans in Congress treat basic democratic norms. Pro- and anti-Trump forces have mobilized voters around this and other crucial issues, such as immigration and women’s rights, for the 6 November elections.

Don't worry about the soybean crash. Michel Temer -the newly 'elected president' of Brazil will cut down the rain forests to make room for soy bean crops.  That commodity along with beef prices in the index are sure to  increase.

Soybean Exports Have Crashed in 2018

Apropos of nothing in particular, I thought I’d check in and see how US soybean exports are doing. As you’ll recall, we ship a lot of soybeans to China, but in July China levied a 25 percent tariff on American soybeans in retaliation for our tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other products. Here are exports to China in 2018 compared to 2017:

Exports to China dropped to nearly zero as soon as the tariffs were put in place. But maybe exports to the rest of the world have made up for this. Let’s take a look:

Nope. Summer exports weren’t too far from normal, but the big fall soybean season has crashed completely. September shipments were down by a quarter, while October and November shipments (through 11/18) were down by nearly half. This is the price of stupid trade wars.

Anti-vaccine community behind North Carolina chickenpox outbreak

A North Carolina school with a large anti-vaccine community is at the heart of the state's largest chickenpox outbreak in decades, officials say.
On Friday 36 students at Asheville Waldorf School were diagnosed with the disease, the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper reported.
The school has one of the state's highest rates of religious exemption, allowing students to skip vaccination.
US health officials say vaccinating is far safer than getting chickenpox.
"This is the biggest chickenpox outbreak state health officials are aware of since the vaccine became available," a North Carolina Department of Health spokesman told the BBC in an emailed statement.

The world will soon have a fertility rate below 2.1 children for women. That's the so called replacement rate. 80 years after we reach this number global population will decline (because people will also live longer). Source:

Nothing in the study regarding famine, war and climate change which should have been considered.

Some in the USA are becoming smarter voters (from Kevin Drum)

Ghitza’s post about the demographics of 2018 is here, and it contains lots of interesting stuff. Here are Catalist’s estimates for the change in support for Democrats among various demographic groups:

Interestingly, the biggest Democratic pickup among age groups wasn’t the youngest voters, but the 30-44 group. Less surprisingly, the Catalist data confirms that the rift between college and non-college whites has turned into a chasm: compared to 2014, support for Democrats went up 22 points among college whites while it went down 8 points among non-college whites. That’s a net 30-point change in just two years.
