Left view of Orange Trump

Comment by Doone on February 19, 2018 at 12:55pm

Donald Trump Is America’s Worst, 2nd Worst, or 5th Worst President

Today is Presidents/President’s/Presidents’ Day, and the New York Times is celebrating with a bit of clickbait that ranks all 44 presidents.¹ It turns out that presidential scholars of the left outrageously rank Donald Trump as our worst president after only a year in office, which means we have to turn to right-leaning scholars to get a more considered view of things:²

Number 40! Now that’s more like it. Trump is better than the guy who sleepwalked into the Civil War and the general who died after only 40 days. But he’s still worse than the Teapot Dome guy and the guy who inspired the Mallard Fillmore comic strip. Sad.

¹In presidential numbering, Grover Cleveland counts twice since he had two separate terms, so we’ve had 45 presidents. In presidential rankings, Cleveland is just one person, so we’ve had 44 presidents. Got it?

²It’s worth noting that presidential scholars, just like us common folks, seem to have a bias for the present. Six out of 14 postwar presidents make their top 10.

Orange Leader having Twitter issues

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Trump began the weekend believing that something good had just happened to him. An indictment leveled against 13 Russians for interfering with the 2016 election had not accused him or anyone around him of wrongdoing. “No collusion” was his refrain.

But once ensconced at his Florida estate on Friday, Mr. Trump, facing long hours indoors as he avoided breezy rounds of golf after last week’s school shooting a few miles away, began watching TV.

The president’s mood began to darken as it became clearer to him that some commentators were portraying the indictment as nothing for him to celebrate, according to three people with knowledge of his reaction. Those commentators called it proof that he had not won the election on his own, a particularly galling, if not completely accurate, charge for a president long concerned about his legitimacy.

What followed was a two-day Twitter tirade that was unusually angry and defiant even by Mr. Trump’s standards. In his tweets on Sunday, Mr. Trump sought to shift the blame to Democrats for Russia’s meddling, saying that President Barack Obama had not done enough to stop the interference.

The president denied — despite the ample evidence to the contrary — that he had ever suggested that Moscow might not have been involved. He called Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, a “monster.” And he asserted that the Russians were “laughing their asses off” because the efforts to investigate and combat Moscow’s meddling had only given the Russians what they wanted.

Extra-judicial execution in Iran

JANE GREEN assesses the latest unexplained death in custody in the Islamic Republic of Iran

THE plausibility of the claims of President Hassan Rouhani to be leading a “reformist” government in Iran took another blow last week, with the death in custody of prominent environmental campaigner Kavous Seyed Emami.
The death of Seyed-Emami follows a further crackdown by the Iranian authorities after widespread protests demanding political and economic reform spread to at least 80 Iranian cities earlier in the year.
Environmental issues, such as pollution, water scarcity and the drying up of wetlands were amongst the issues contributing to public discontent.
Iranian prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi is quoted by Iranian News Agency Ilna as claiming: “This person is one of the accused and given he knew there is a torrent of confessions against him and he confessed himself, unfortunately he committed suicide in prison.”
As a founder of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, Seyed-Emami’s main concern was the protection of the Asiatic cheetah, an endangered species of which it is believed only 50 remain.
Several other members of the foundation remain in jail while the deputy head of the Environmental Protection Organisation, Kaveh Madani, was detained for 72 hours over the weekend.
The arrest of Madani is a particular blow to Rouhani who last year tempted him from his position at Imperial College London for the government job.
Rouhani has been keen to show that the government is opening opportunities for Iranians living abroad.
