@Keely - No, you're not the only one. No wonder the song was such a hit. =)

David Frum on the War of 1812: A small war with big consequences

  Jun 9, 2012 – 9:00 AM ET Last Updated: Jun 11, 2012 10:16 AM E

If Canadians know any history at all, they know the story of the war of 1812. (Or at least the part about the British burning the White House.) Americans usually focus their remembrance on bigger, bloodier conflicts. Yet in this bicentennial year, one American historian is urging his countrymen to appreciate that their nationhood was forged in two centuries of war up and down the bloody warpath between Albany and Montreal.

Eliot Cohen is one of America’s leading writers on military affairs. His 2002 book Supreme Command (a study of civilian leadership in wartime) featured on president Bush’s reading list that year. I traveled to Iraq with him in 2005 and had the pleasure of introducing him at a recent book event at the Canadian embassy in Washington.

Cohen’s new book, Conquered Into Liberty, offers an arresting idea. It was during their long struggle against the French and Indians that the New England colonies developed a distinctive American idea of how war should be fought.

Yes, very interesting graphic.

Canada is a small macaque sitting right besides this giant pachyderm of a neighbor. If it falls, we're squashed. So we imitate in the hope this will help.

Interesting InfoGraphic about Canada - why the big increase in military spending - it is almost as if it has a large spendthrift neighbor they are trying to imitate, join or fear?

The chart is for food, meaning that the alcohol would be for human consumption. Ethanol Blamed for Record Food Prices says that 40% of the corn grown in the U.S. is used ethyl alcohol fuel. 6.5 billion gallons of ethanol were produced last year. It would be interesting to see how much grain is used for cattle. Where did you get the graph Keely?

Comment by Davy on June 9, 2012 at 7:37am

Well! I am a meat eater but when you have to subsidise the meat producers that much means that the meat producers are actually not economically viable!

I agree with you Neal it is totally backwards.

@ Chris Ethanol or more correctly ethanol fuel, is ethyl alcohol the same stuff you drink only its about 99% pure alcohol. That is why when car motors had long stroke engines they could run on whisky, vodka, rye whiskey. So it could be lumped in with the alcohol sector.
