The chart below shows the effect of the Great Recession on high school grads entering the workforce. Back in 2006-08, about 60% found work of some kind right after graduating. Since 2009, only about 40% have found work. This is a staggering waste of human potential, and almost certainly a lifelong burden for these workers, since abundant evidence suggests that starting out your working career either unemployed or in a low-paying job leads to lower pay throughout your entire life. Having the bad luck to graduate in 2009 will probably cost these kids something close to half a million dollars over the course of their lives.
The data comes from a report by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. The chart comes from Stuart Staniford.

Comment by Susan Stanko on June 6, 2012 at 2:25pm One of the Senate races has been deemed to close to call. At least we can make it harder on Walker to continue his nonsense.

Comment by doone on June 6, 2012 at 2:18pm Count me out of all the “oh noes, we shouldn’t have tried to recall Scott Walker” bullshit. Every time Republicans try some crazy shit—shutting down the government, impeaching Clinton, etc.—we hear about how they learned their lesson and they’ll never try it again. Then, of course, as soon as they get their chance, they try again. Sure, they didn’t shut down the government this time, but they came awfully close. There were few if any repercussions for impeachment and the government shut downs (they held on to Congress through it all) and there were none for the recent near shutdown.
They say to be a great shooter in basketball, you have to have no conscience. You missed your last ten shots, who cares, you take another, because you know you’re a good shooter. Likewise, an effective political movement should have no conscience. The last crazy shit you tried didn’t work, just start planning the next caper.
Wisconsin Democrats took a pretty good run at Walker. They came up short, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Maybe recall elections are a trickier vehicle than we thought.
Doesn’t mean it’s time to retreat back into Vichy mode.

Comment by Neal on June 6, 2012 at 10:30am Ray was a great writer. I grew up with him, Clarke, Asimov and the rest. Good memories of fantastic tales.
