The Patriotism Of High Taxes?

Stephen King's call for the rich to pay more taxes has gone viral. You can see why:

I’ve known rich people, and why not, since I’m one of them? The majority would rather douse their dicks with lighter fluid, strike a match, and dance around singing “Disco Inferno” than pay one more cent in taxes to Uncle Sugar.

His response to those high-income Americans:

It’s un-fucking-American is what it is. I don’t want you to apologize for being rich; I want you to acknowledge that in America, we all should have to pay our fair share. That our civics classes never taught us that being American means that—sorry, kiddies—you’re on your own. That those who have received much must be obligated to pay—not to give, not to “cut a check and shut up,” in Governor Christie’s words, but to pay—in the same proportion. That’s called stepping up and not whining about it. That’s called patriotism, a word the Tea Partiers love to throw around as long as it doesn’t cost their beloved rich folks any money.

Jacket Copy points out that King's net worth is around $400 million. Will Wilkinson goestoe-to-toe with King.

He had a good week. He hasn't seen these levels since the capture of Bin Laden, and before that, for two years. Here's the comparison with Reagan's numbers:

Daniel Chong, an innocent UC San Diego student, spent five days in a holding cell without food, water, or human contact after he was wrongfully detained during a raid of a friend’s house by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The 23-year-old wasn’t charged with a crime, but officers forgot to release him. He kicked, screamed, and cried, but no one came to his aid: “They never came back, ignored all my cries and I still don’t know what happened. I’m not sure how they could forget me.”

Chong was forced to drink his own urine for hydration and he carved the words “Sorry Mom” into his arm with glass in a fit of psychosis. “I had to do what I had to do to survive,” he said. “I was completely insane.”

On Chong’s fifth day in the small, windowless room, officers finally heard his pleas for help. Upon his release, he was incoherent and had to be hospitalized. He was found to have eaten glass and treated for a perforated lung.

Chong is considering filing a lawsuit against the DEA, which has apologized to him and promised a review of the incident.

"We Can Learn To Ignore The Bullshit In The Bible About Gay People"

During a speech at a high school journalism convention, Dan Savage attacked anti-gay Biblical literalism, which caused some Christian students to walk out:

The right, predictably, flipped its shit. Savage apologizes for name-calling but holds his ground otherwise:

I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised. I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against—and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying "motivated by faith")—because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong. Yet the same people who make that claim choose to ignore what the Bible has to say about a great deal else. I did not attack Christianity. I attackedhypocrisy. My remarks can only be read as an attack on all Christians if you believe that all Christians are hypocrites. Which I don't believe.

The case must be made about the inconsistent way that Christianists read the Bible to tilt it focus entirely on gays. But the case against the hypocritical, selective reading of the Bible is so strong that it undermines it to use the term "bullshit". Using logic - as Dan also did - always wins in civil rights struggles. In the end. Dan's actually quite nuanced feelings about the Catholicism he grew up in can be found here.

After reading that David Koch said "If the unions win the {Scott Walker] recall there will be no stopping union power." in todays NYT's article Recall Election Test Strategies for November I decided to make a small donation to the recall effort. That recall elections sounds like the standoff over workers right to organize. If Walker wins everyone will end up making minimum wage. Wait - that's on the chopping block too!
