Comment by doone on April 30, 2012 at 3:09pm During a speech at a high school journalism convention, Dan Savage attacked anti-gay Biblical literalism, which caused some Christian students to walk out:
The right, predictably, flipped its shit. Savage apologizes for name-calling but holds his ground otherwise:
I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised. I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against—and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying "motivated by faith")—because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong. Yet the same people who make that claim choose to ignore what the Bible has to say about a great deal else. I did not attack Christianity. I attackedhypocrisy. My remarks can only be read as an attack on all Christians if you believe that all Christians are hypocrites. Which I don't believe.
The case must be made about the inconsistent way that Christianists read the Bible to tilt it focus entirely on gays. But the case against the hypocritical, selective reading of the Bible is so strong that it undermines it to use the term "bullshit". Using logic - as Dan also did - always wins in civil rights struggles. In the end. Dan's actually quite nuanced feelings about the Catholicism he grew up in can be found here.

Comment by Chris on April 29, 2012 at 7:51pm After reading that David Koch said "If the unions win the {Scott Walker] recall there will be no stopping union power." in todays NYT's article Recall Election Test Strategies for November I decided to make a small donation to the recall effort. That recall elections sounds like the standoff over workers right to organize. If Walker wins everyone will end up making minimum wage. Wait - that's on the chopping block too!

In Do Not Ask What Good We Do, Robert Draper reports on a long dinner in which Republicansmapped out their campaign strategy against President Obama:
The dinner lasted nearly four hours. They parted company almost giddily. The Republicans had agreed on a way forward:
Go after Geithner.....Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies....Begin attacking vulnerable Democrats on the airwaves.
This sounds unremarkable except for one thing: it took place on Inauguration Day, 2009. That's how long the Obama honeymoon lasted: zero days. Most of the Republican leadership was dead set against compromising in any way from the very first day.
By now that's not exactly news. But it certainly belies the Republican claim that they were willing to work with Obama but he simply never made the effort. They weren't.

Comment by doone on April 25, 2012 at 9:13pm Rolling Stone asks:
Newspapers?
I’ll thumb through all the major papers in the morning. I’ll read the Times and Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, just to catch up.
Do you read Paul Krugman?
I read all of the New York Times columnists. Krugman’s obviously one of the smartest economic reporters out there, but I also read some of the conservative columnists, just to get a sense of where those arguments are going. There are a handful of blogs, Andrew Sullivan’s on the Daily Beast being an example, that combine thoughtful analysis with a sampling of lots of essays that are out there. The New Yorker and The Atlantic still do terrific work. Every once in a while, I sneak in a novel or a nonfiction book.
Dishheads are everywhere.
