political pictures - Times Are Tough

I remember feeling very sympathetic when the Dixie Chicks were banned from all the country stations for exercising freedom of speech. Old has been rocker Ted, no problem, say what you want. It's only when conservatives are attacked that it's a problem. Jackasses.

Obama's Honeymoon Lasted Zero Days

| Thu Apr. 26, 2012 7:36 AM PDT

In Do Not Ask What Good We Do, Robert Draper reports on a long dinner in which Republicansmapped out their campaign strategy against President Obama:

The dinner lasted nearly four hours. They parted company almost giddily. The Republicans had agreed on a way forward:

Go after Geithner.....Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies....Begin attacking vulnerable Democrats on the airwaves.

This sounds unremarkable except for one thing: it took place on Inauguration Day, 2009. That's how long the Obama honeymoon lasted: zero days. Most of the Republican leadership was dead set against compromising in any way from the very first day.

By now that's not exactly news. But it certainly belies the Republican claim that they were willing to work with Obama but he simply never made the effort. They weren't.

What POTUS Reads

Rolling Stone asks:

Newspapers?

I’ll thumb through all the major papers in the morning. I’ll read the Times and Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, just to catch up.

Do you read Paul Krugman?

I read all of the New York Times columnists. Krugman’s obviously one of the smartest economic reporters out there, but I also read some of the conservative columnists, just to get a sense of where those arguments are going. There are a handful of blogs, Andrew Sullivan’s on the Daily Beast being an example, that combine thoughtful analysis with a sampling of lots of essays that are out there. The New Yorker and The Atlantic still do terrific work. Every once in a while, I sneak in a novel or a nonfiction book.

Dishheads are everywhere.

"We All Hate Our Women"

Egyptian revolutionary Mona Eltahawy pens a searing polemic on the status of women in the Arab world:

Not a single Arab country ranks in the top 100 in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report, putting the region as a whole solidly at the planet's rock bottom. Poor or rich, we all hate our women. Neighbors Saudi Arabia and Yemen, for instance, might be eons apart when it comes to GDP, but only four places separate them on the index, with the kingdom at 131 and Yemen coming in at 135 out of 135 countries. Morocco, often touted for its "progressive" family law (a 2005 report by Western "experts" called it "an example for Muslim countries aiming to integrate into modern society"), ranks 129; according to Morocco's Ministry of Justice, 41,098 girls under age 18 were married there in 2010.
