TOM FRIEDMAN’S WAR ON HUMANITY

Thomas Friedman, three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign affairs columnist for the New York Times, once offered the following insight into his modus operandi: “I often begin writing columns by interviewing myself.”

Some might see this as an unsurprising revelation in light of Edward Said’s appraisal: “It’s as if … what scholars, poets, historians, fighters, and statesmen have done is not as important or as central as what Friedman himself thinks.”

According to Friedman, the purpose of the auto-interviews is merely to analyze his feelings on certain issues. Given that his feelings tend to undergo drastic inter- and sometimes intra-columnar modifications, one potentially convenient byproduct of such an approach to journalism is the impression that Friedman interviews many more people than he actually does.

For example, while one of Friedman’s alter-egos considered blasphemous the “Saddamist” notion that the Iraq war had anything to do with oil, another was of the opinion that the war was “partly about oil,” and another appeared to be under the impression that it was entirely about oil, assigning the blame for U.S. troop deaths in Fallujah to Hummer proprietors. Despite Friedman’s identification as “a liberal on every issue other than this war,” competing layers of his persona defined said conflict as “the most radical-liberal revolutionary war the U.S. has ever launched” as well as part of a “neocon strategy.”

Non-Obama Socialist Story of the Day

While conservative Americans keep misinterpreting President Obama as a socialist, France went out of their way to elect a legitimate socialist candidate, Francois Hollande, who won the first round of elections, trouncing incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy. Hollande’s hypothetical victory could also mean socialism is redefined for some Americans, having only heard of it through criticisms of President Obama and marathon viewings of Red Dawn.

Obama Sticking Up for Students Story of the Day

Yesterday during his weekly radio address, President Obama said that he would pressure lawmakers to keep student loan rates at 3.4 percent. If ignored, the rates will double in July. The president stressed that higher education “cannot a luxury [but] an economic imperative that every family must be able to afford.” GOP members are pushing back, unsurprisingly, in their quest to make America’s youth a contingency of dum-dums.

The Defense of Marriage Act, an Act to Amend the North Carolina Constitution

For the citizens of North Carolina to add an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution, both houses of the State Legislature have to first vote for this amendment to be placed on the ballot.

SB 106, an act to amend the North Carolina Constitution, has been introduced to the General Assembly of North Carolina by Senators James Forrester (R-District 41), Jerry W. Tillman (R-District 29), and Dan Soucek (R-District 45). “An act to amend the North Carolina Constitution to provide Marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.”

So far this act has 20 co-sponsors. SB 106 has been referred to the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate. You can follow the status of this act on the North Carolina General Assembly Web site: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/

Prayerfully contact your state senator and ask him to become a co-sponsor.

Let us pray that the citizens of North Carolina finally may have the opportunity to vote on this amendment in the election of September 2012
