I read an article a long time ago that said there is something about how a beat frequency can put people in a hypnotic state. I tried looking up the subject but didn't find it. As I recall it was a low beat frequency difference of 8 hz - which seems impossible to detect. This article says 6 hz. If you follow the link in the article it will take you to a list of frequencies.
