A Woman's right to choose

Women's rights arguments in favour of abortion

  1. Woman have a right to decide what to do with their bodies
  2. You can’t have gender equality without the right to have an abortion
  3. Banning abortion puts woman at risk by forcing them to use illegal abortionists
  4. The right to an abortion should be part of a group of pregnancy rights that allows woman to have a free informed choice to end a pregnancy

Yet another piece I wrote a LONG time ago, but considering the current attacks on a woman's right to control her own body, I think the relevance of the following still maintains.  Let me know what…Continue

Suzanna, I've always had the impression that because the Isle of Man isn't under the direct control of the British Parliament the leaders of the Island have been far more conservative than the rest of the UK, on all things, not just the Abortion debate.

Good old Canada, showing everyone else how it's done.

Stephen: it's great that you did that. I haven't been well enough to have been involved in any way unfortunately but have been following the story in the local news and am pleased that it's going the way I hoped.

Ultimately I don't want my relatives or any other women having their future decided on whether or not they have enough money to go to England. It isn't Catholic here, so I don't know why it's taken so long.

Suzanna, have you taken part in the campaign?

I can remember that I and my Union took part in the protests marches in the early days of the call for a Woman's right to choose.

Mrs.B. it looks like Canada has some of the most enlightened laws on the subject.

I haven't paid much attention to the laws here in Canada, as I am long past child bearing years, but I found this at Wikipedia.....

Abortion in Canada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abortion in Canada is legal at all stages of pregnancy,[1] and is governed by the Canada Health Act.[2] While some non-legal obstacles exist, Canada is one of only a few nations with no legal restrictions on abortion.[3][4] Regulations and accessibility vary between provinces.[5]

Prior to 1969, all abortion was illegal in Canada. The Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968–69 introduced by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government legalized abortion, as long as a committee of doctors signed off that it was necessary for the physical or mental well-being of the mother. In 1988, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in R. v. Morgentaler that the existing laws were unconstitutional, and struck down the 1969 law. The then-governing Progressive Conservatives attempted, but failed, to pass a new abortion law, and since then Canada has had no criminal laws governing the subject, and abortion is a decision made by a woman with her doctor. Without legal delays, most abortions are done at an early stage.[6]

In 2005, 97,254 abortions were reported in Canada; it is estimated that this number "represents approximately 90% of all abortions performed in Canada involving Canadian residents".[7] This number has been decreasing since at least 1998.[7]

Quite Mrs B far too long.

It's not quite equal to the English because there you can have an abortion up to 24 weeks pretty much on demand as far as I'm aware, although the law doesn't say that, in practice, it seems to be the case.

Over here it will allow for abortions up to 14 weeks unless there is risk to the life of mother or foetus. It's a good start.

They are also looking into decriminalizing it over here.

Long past time, too.

Suzanna. That's great news. Well done to the people of the Isle of Man.

Does that quite equalise things with the rest of the UK?

Comment by Suzanna on December 16, 2017 at 11:29

Yes, i think it's a good strong message which takes no explanation. The arguments have been interesting and at times deeply frustrating. It has been uncertain which way it would go until recently when the government put it out to the public for consultation. Here are the results:

87% agreed that a woman should have a choice to request an abortion up to 14 weeks.

84.7% said that rape victims should be able to request an abortion without reporting the crime.

81.5% agreed that women should be able to request a termination at any stage of the pregnancy, including after 24 weeks if the foetus has a fatal abnormality.

The law is being written up and should be here in the first few months of 2018 if all goes well.

Wow what a great idea to use an iconic picture of the Handmaids tale to protest unfair abortion laws

That makes for an impressive sight.
